Associate Director

A comprehensive campaign is the means by which an institution seeks to advance its strategic priorities and shape its future. To that end, Lehigh University seeks to leverage existing volunteer programs to inform and engage all constituents around the goals of the University and the priorities articulated in the campaign and create a new group of volunteers called Campaign Ambassadors. The Associate Director will manage volunteer activities as they relate to the Campaign. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Volunteer Engagement and work closely with colleagues within the Department and across the University. The Associate Director will develop and manage budgets, establish success metrics and take an entrepreneurial approach to the work.




  1. Recruit and manage Campaign Ambassadors

    • Partner closely with Major Gift Officers, Annual Fund Officers, Planned Giving and Directors to recruit and identify candidates for this volunteer role; this will require portfolio analysis and the involvement of the research team

    • Manage this project and organize cross-departmental collaborations

    • Day-to-day management of the volunteers will include keeping prospect managers informed and involved



  2. Develop framework by which existing volunteer boards contribute to the Campaign

    • Oversee the involvement of existing volunteer programs as it relates to their interests and engagement with the campaign; this includes regular communication with staff who directly manage volunteers

    • Campaign updates, as well as opportunities for engagement in the campaign are expected on a regular and consistent basis

    • Develop a framework that can be leveraged by program managers to create a informed and involved volunteer base



  3. Determine success metrics and deliver regular reports to the Board of Trustees Development and Alumni Relations Committee

    • Establish and implement a process for evaluating the contribution of individual volunteers

    • Prepare written and verbal presentations for other constituents including senior administration and Department staff

    • Work with Alumni Relations partners and Department Services for volunteer coding, report creation and dashboards



  4. Design and deliver volunteer training and communication strategies to keep volunteers well-informed

    • Deliver webinars, in-person meetings and tracks during volunteer trainings

    • Coordinates meetings with various senior administrators; as well as with University and Development and Alumni Relations Communications to ensure consistent and effective communication about the campaign and campaign volunteers; this involves social media and other interactive media

    • Orient volunteers to ensure their understanding of the Campaign and their role and responsibilities therein

    • Solicit feedback from volunteers to ensure they have the information and tools needed to be successful

    • Prepare individuals for high-stake activities including gift solicitations, public speaking or sensitive communications

    • Assist with conflict resolution

    • Plan and implement formal and informal volunteer recognition activities throughout the campaign



  5. Develop individualized volunteer plans for each Ambassador and other high-level volunteers to ensure lifelong engagement with Lehigh

    • Be knowledgeable about all volunteer boards and opportunities throughout the University

    • Monitor volunteer contributions throughout the Campaign to inform next steps

    • Nominate Campaign Volunteers for awards and other roles

    • Gather feedback from staff and other volunteers during plan creation



  6. Manage day to day implementation of a new Volunteer Engagement web portal and tool

    • Work closely with the Director of Volunteer Engagement to migrate all volunteer management to one third-party system that handles nominations, position postings, volunteer matching and individualized plans

    • Serve as liaison and partner to vendor who supports the platform

    • Work to rectify any challenges encountered by volunteers utilizing technology

    • Develop and execute training for volunteers

    • Provide content and updates for the online community





  • This position has fiscal or financial responsibilities other than employee expense activity, such as processing or approving transactions; monitoring or preparing budgets; or generating income for University

  • Periods of high volume/workload may be required

  • Occasional evening, holiday or weekend hours

  • Occasional travel




  1. Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; Master's degree preferred

  2. Five to eight years related work experience

  3. Proven leadership skills and managerial experience building cross-functional teams among staff without direct reporting authority

  4. Experience in volunteer management and volunteer program development

  5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  6. Solid analytical, decision making and problem solving skills

  7. Ability to complete projects on time and on budget, and report on status and progress

  8. Solid computer skills and fluency with digital media and social channels

  9. Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, county and national criminal background checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance. Based upon the requirements of the position Lehigh may also request credit history reports, motor vehicle checks and professional license/certification verification
