Multimedia Coordinator

Organization Description:

Semester at Sea, administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education, provides undergraduates with a global voyage exploring and studying people, places, and cultures around the world. More than 68,000 students have studied abroad with Semester at Sea and its predecessor program since its founding in 1963. Semester at Sea is a non-profit 501c3 education organization. Colorado State University is the program’s academic partner.

General Responsibilities:

In today's evolved and continually shifting media landscape, modern journalists are pursuing storytelling the multimedia age, fully vested in the story and with the proper tools to tell that story, be it photo, video, audio or words (or any combination of those mediums).

They are visual storytellers - a standard in new media - and with a model that the story imposes the medium, not vice-versa. Successful Semester at Sea Multimedia Coordinators are able to see the multimedia possibilities of the subject, story, field program or local interaction, and then select the best medium to share that story.

Not only must they be able to adapt their style for different types of reporting, but they must also be able to adapt their style within a single medium, across multiple platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, SAS blogs, Flickr, YouTube, or anywhere else that our audience gathers.

The job responsibilities include:

  • Writing features, interviews and reportage
  • Taking, editing and publishing still images
  • Filming, editing and publishing video reports
  • Recording, editing and publishing audio reports including podcasts
  • Producing mixed-media online stories that reflect and share the SAS experience in way that engages and immerses the viewer into that SAS experience
  • Understanding of the demographic reach of each web platform (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) used by SAS, and producing content specific for each platform that furthers the program's goals, message and enrollment needs while staying true to the Semester at Sea brand. 
  • Fully equipped to produce multimedia content in the field (laptop, photo/video equipment required)
  • Complete the Semester at Sea Training Program in Fort Collins, Colorado
  • Complete other duties/tasks as assigned 

Candidate Characteristics and Objectives

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA in photojournalism, multimedia journalism, or visual journalism, with at least two years of experience in the media field, directly related to the above position.
  • Must exhibit comprehensive abilities in interview methods, lighting, audio, photo editing, video editing, online delivery.
  • Online work samples showing media content in video, photo, mixed-media and audio form. (No DVD portfolios will be accepted.)
  • Must be operating on the Apple Mac platform.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite is preferred (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and After Effects)
  • Be committed to the role of higher education in society, sensitive to the mission of higher education and understanding of the culture of a shipboard nonprofit institution.

Production

  • Works to produce a variety of video products for broadcasting, compression output, webcasting, video streaming, and digital formats
  • Experience with photo and video cameras, hard disk video recorders, and audio mixers
  • Adjusts audio equipment including assorted lavalier and shotgun microphones
  • Coordinates pre-production and production planning activities; communicates technical information in non-technical terms;
  • Conducts field-based video production

Post Production

  • Performs video and photo post-production tasks which includes reviewing footage, making editorial decisions, rough cuts, audio adjustment, color correction, and final editing using Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and Adobe elements software.
  • Progressively responsible experience in a professional video and photo editing/producing environment demonstrating competence in all areas of video and photo production.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of digital video cameras, video and photo editing equipment; operate computers and relevant systems and software.

Compensation:

  • At least 12 weeks, part time (up to 28 hours/week) in advance of the voyage: $10/hr. 
  • Receives a voyage stipend of $3,000, paid in three equal installments during the voyage. Also receives travel allowance for airfare and hotel accommodation through STA Travel. Finally, receives a taxable $500 stipend, paid on the first installment during the voyage.
  • Coverage of field programs worth up to $7,000.
