Starting Salary Range: Starting Salary: $52,020 to $55,728 (Step 3); based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity. Full 2017/18 Faculty Salary Range is $52,020 to $90,205.

Job Summary:
The Department of Music & Sonic Arts at Portland Community College's Cascade Campus seeks a full-time, permanent instructor. Fusing studies in music, science, coding, and design, Music & Sonic Arts serves traditional and non-traditional musicians excited to explore the limits of what is technologically and artistically possible with new instruments, new sounds, and new methods of performance and composition. The program prepares students for leadership in artistic, technical, educational, entrepreneurial and research efforts. In addition, students learn the valuable contributions of people of diverse backgrounds and are encouraged to imagine the critical, future roles of technology in the advancement of equity and social justice. Continuously, the department analyzes the complex, nuanced and often unconscious ways that human behavior, music and technology are classed, gendered and raced. Situated at Portland Community College's Cascade Campus, Music & Sonic Arts is in the heart of Portland's Mississippi District, the "Music District," the program energized by a neighborhood rich with popular and experimental performance venues, electronic instrument designers, community based musical organizations, and retailers of cutting-edge hardware. The program leverages also the city's burgeoning concentrations of creatives, tech developers, makers and entrepreneurs. Music & Sonic Arts is a prominent contributor to Portland's arts, immersive technologies and STEAM economies.
Program infrastructure includes: Recording studio with analog and digital control rooms; 20-station Digital Audio Lab; Interactivity Lab (creative coding and interactive technologies); Piano lab; Fabrication Lab (laser cutter, CNC router, 3D printers, consumer and industrial sewing machines etc.); Virtual Reality Development Center; Theory, choral and ensemble room. In addition, Music & Sonic Arts is home to Unity Gain. One of two high density loudspeaker arrays in the Pacific Northwest, Unity Gain is a 32-channel, portable and re-configurable HDLA that supports student research and provides Portland with leading edge sonic possibilities and experiences.

Responsibilities/Duties:
- Instruct students using approved course outcome guides developed by college-wide subject area Faculty; assess student performance in these courses.
- Attend and participate in college-wide, campus/center division, department, and program meetings and activities.
- Serve on Subject Area Curriculum Committees and/or such other College committees as may be assigned.
- Assist in the recruitment of students.
- Provide registration, advising, and guidance assistance to students.
- Provide professional assistance to staff and students.
- Provide information and assistance on College operations as may be requested.
- Compile and/or research data as may be assigned.
- Provide services to students in a manner which does not discriminate as to race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual preference or marital status.
- Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
- Maintain College safety standards in their work areas; ensure that students are trained in good safety practices; and make reasonable efforts to ensure that students follow good safety practices.

- Perform other related duties as provided in Faculty Agreement.
Minimum Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, your application materials must show how you meet the following requirements:
- Master's degree in Music Education, Performance, Composition, Audio Engineering, Music Production, Sound Design or related field
- Three (3) years experience in industry as a performer, composer, engineer, producer or sound designer.
OR
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Performance, Composition, Audio Engineering, Music Production, Sound Design or related field
- Four (4) years experience in industry as a performer, composer, engineer, producer or sound designer.
OR
- Associates degree in Music Education, Performance, Composition, Audio Engineering, Music Production, Sound Design or related field
- Five (5) years of professional experience in industry as a performer, composer, engineer, producer or sound designer.
OR
- Demonstrated competency: For other kinds of experience not listed here, the Division Dean, in consultation with the Faculty Department Chair, will make a recommendation to the Dean of Instruction which is subject to approval by the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs

- Artistic fluency in multiple, contemporary musical genres with various cultural roots.

You have been tasked with crafting a call (500-2000 words) that accomplishes the following: A) Brings talented and accomplished artists from afar to Portland (regional, national, global); B) Provides performance opportunities for local artists; C) Connects the technical and artistic capabilities of an HDLA to the department's commitments to equity, inclusion and social justice.
3. Describe your artistic practice. How do you see your practice enriching the Music & Sonic Arts Department and the communities we serve?
