Are you passionate about the veterinary technology career, farms, and education? Portland Community College's Rock Creek Campus is looking for a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) to support the Veterinary Technology Program as an Instructional Support Technician (IST).

The Program employs two full-time Instructional Support Technicians (who are certified vet techs or CVTs) to prepare for instructional labs and other activities, to provide direct support of students during instruction, to direct and train student employees, and to assist with providing care for program animals. The incoming IST will work closely with another CVT, a full-time farm coordinator, two full-time faculty (DVMs) and other program staff including students and part-time instructors who may be CVTs and/or DVMs.
This position is a full-time 40 hour/week position, but flexibility may be required as dictated by animal needs, student needs, or instructional schedule.Animals used in the program and living on campus and/or at the Rock Creek farm include approximately 30 sheep, 20 cattle, 6 camelids, 2 horses, and 3 goats. The campus includes a kennel which houses up to 20 dogs and cats. The program has also housed guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, gerbils, hamsters, mice, and rats. Animal numbers vary from season to season and year to year. This position is slated to begin work in May 2019 but may begin earlier in order to provide time working with the incumbent IST, who will retire at the end of June 2019. Specific Duties Include:
  • Working with Vet Tech (VT) students individually or in groups to enhance their learning in the assigned classes; providing direct assistance in the use of equipment and materials needed for instruction; orients students to the labs.
  • Working with department chair and program faculty to develop schedules, set up laboratory experiences for students, modify labs to achieve desired results; evaluate student progress and provide this information to instructors; may lecture on specific elements of the laboratory work; may administer exams.
  • Coordinating the day-to-day activities and oversight the work of part-time and/or student workers, especially involved in animal care duties ( duties (husbandry, enrichment, cleaning, medication, record keeping, etc. in accordance with AVMA, IACUC and USDA regulations) for the department.
  • Ordering, maintaining and inventorying equipment, materials, supplies, live animals and written materials required for student instructional needs; may perform or schedule repairs on equipment; checks out equipment, supplies, materials to students; maintains contact with appropriate vendors. This includes ordering, stocking, and logging a small inventory of controlled substances used in the program, following regulations under the DEA.
  • Ensuring that faculty and students are oriented to the proper use of the VT equipment and personal protective equipment.
  • Participating in departmental staff meetings, VT industry advisory committee and safety committee meetings; over the telephone or in person provides students, staff, instructors and public with information relating to specific programs; may represent the department/program to interested groups in the community. May represent the department at divisional meetings.
  • Monthly reconciling of purchase card transactions and ongoing monitoring of materials/supply costs against departmental budget.
  • Handling, storing, and disposing of hazardous materials following Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and/or other regulatory agency protocols. Maintains Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
  • Providing for the general cleanliness and security of the VT laboratories and work areas; assists in providing for a safe environment for the conduct of the laboratories.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile
These qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position.
Throughout the screening process, you will be evaluated based on the demonstration of these qualifications.
  • Must be currently licensed as a CVT in Oregon (or be able to obtain such a license by the start date for the position).
  • Must have familiarity with equipment typically used in Veterinary practice, such as:
    • Radiography/Digital Radiography Systems
    • Medical Records software
    • Ultrasound
    • Blood Chemistry Analyzers
    • Dentistry Equipment
    • Materials and Supplies used for Large Animals
    • Anesthesia machines and monitoring equipment
PCCs Veterinary Technology program does not conduct research on animals, but the use of animals in its educational program requires the program to follow the same regulations that protect animal welfare at research facilities. Therefore, the campus maintains an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The program CVTs play an integral role in the implementation of these regulations and also serve on the IACUC. Ideal candidates will have experience with such committees and regulations.Minimum QualificationsTo be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).
  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years of post-secondary education in the Veterinary Technology discipline.
  • Three years of experience in the veterinary technology area are required; relevant experience may substitute for the post-secondary education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must have proven written and oral communications skills adequate to assist students in understanding the work they are to perform.
  • Proven ability to lead others and evaluate performance.
  • Depending on laboratory assignment, some positions may also require specialized knowledge and program-specific certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference will be given to applicants with addition years of experience above the minimum requirement
  • Professional experience in an educational environment
Salary:
The first two steps of the range are: $3,369 to $3,470 per month. Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity.
