Work Study Student -TAP Academic Coaching



TAP Academic Coaching

Are you interested in supporting UC students with intellectual and developmental disabilities on campus? If so, the Transition and Access Program (TAP 4 year college certificate program in the School of Ed.) is looking to hire students to be academic coaches.

Academic Coaches will work with TAP students in an academic classroom setting to provide academic and organizational support for their UC courses. Academic coaches meet with TAP students for two 1-hour and 20 minute sessions each week. During sessions, coaches collaborate with course instructors in order to provide support for TAP students in the following areas:
  • Organization and prioritization of coursework.
  • Assignment completion.
  • Reviewing course materials.
  • Note-taking.
  • Determine modifications and accommodation needed.
  • Applying academic strategies (reading comprehension, written assignments).


Responsibilities:
  • Coaches will support students in working from a protocol checklist in order to maintain organization and consistency.
  • During each session, tutors will document observational data on student progress utilizing google forms.
  • Coaches will communicate with course instructor about student progress, successes, and any challenges that may arise.
  • Coaches will be respectful of student privacy, belongings, and work environment.
  • Coaches will attend ongoing required staff trainings (monthly meetings & training sessions)


Skills needed:
  • Support individuals with personal development and academic skills.
  • Use appropriate language/communication skills so that individuals are naturally motivated.
  • Support TAP students in implementing interventions and taking action toward their goals.
  • Provide detailed documentation of students' strengths, effective supports, and strategies that have been successful, and monitor student progress towards goals.
  • Help TAP students recognize and address barriers and fears.
  • Support problem solving and decision-making.
  • Support TAP students in managing their daily life as a college student with the end goal of independence and self-determination.
  • Support executive functioning skills (planning/organization, emotional control, shift, inhibition, self-monitoring).
  • Communicate with coordinator/instructor as needed.


Minimum Requirements
  • Recipient of work study award based on financial need and must be admitted into a degree program.
  • Must be enrolled at least part-time (6 credit hours for undergraduate students and 5 credit hours for graduate students), with the exception of summer quarter, or will be a registered student during the next academic quarter/semester for summer work. Student workers must meet the enrollment requirement for the entire quarter.
  • Must be age 16 or older.
