Senior Utility Engineer

The Department of A&F Utilities Energy Management at the University of Cincinnati provides utilities for over 100 buildings comprising over12 million gross square feet. Our Utilities Department has two plants on campus that provide electric, steam, and chilled water service to the University, local hospitals and surrounding areas. The plants burn a variety of fuels to ensure our reliability and cost effectiveness. Our staff is trained to efficiently operate and maintain the facilities and equipment, resulting in dependable utilities every day of the year.

This department is currently seeking a Utility Engineer IV who will, under the supervision of designated administrator, utilize prescribed methods to perform specific procedures of dealing with energy efficiency, energy services, facilities management, plant engineering, environmental compliance and alternative energy technologies.

Characteristic Duties:
  • Provide oversight to the production, distribution, and transmission of reliable electricity, steam, and chilled water to over one hundred campus and hospital area buildings supported by the University of Cincinnati Utilities Department
  • Perform ongoing evaluation of production and maintenance activities to insure cost effective modes of operation in the supply of energy
  • Direct the work of contractors or staff in the implementation of maintenance or capital projects
  • Support the overall University and Department goals of ensuring safe, reliable, environmentally compliant, and regulatory compliant operations
  • Develop, recommend, and implement technical design or process changes to improve efficiency, quality, or performance of equipment and processes
  • Monitor and analyze energy production and consumption data from internal plants and the more than one hundred campus and area hospital buildings
  • Oversee internal reporting performed on a monthly basis regarding energy usage at each campus and hospital building
  • Work with internal financial groups to develop internal billing for each building based on identified consumption of each energy
  • Work on an ongoing basis with building management personnel to explain in detail their energy usage trends, impacts, and costs
  • Produce technical reports for management and other groups such as the EPA, PUCO, PJM, Duke, and DOE
  • Work with building management and other internal support groups to identify energy savings opportunities and make recommendations to achieve more energy efficient operations throughout campus
  • Evaluate construction design information such as detail and assembly drawings, design calculations, system layouts and sketches, or specifications
  • Develop procedures to ensure reliability and contingency plans for emergency operations


Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in area related directly to Engineering with 6-8 years related experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be required.

Preferred Knowledge/Experience:
Possess a comprehensive knowledge of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, typically acquired through education and progressive experience; knows how to develop and write basic specifications; possesses comprehensive computer and software systems knowledge. Ability to perform work with minimal direction over a wide range of assignments.
