Metadata Librarian

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Full-time tenure-track faculty appointment responsible for providing leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of metadata and data management strategies that will support discovery, access, management, and preservation of the libraries physical and digital collections. Provides oversight of special collections cataloging.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Advise, train and consult on metadata projects and functions throughout the libraries and select and maintains appropriate metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, and data dictionaries to facilitate access to resources.
  • Preserve and maintain data quality and implement quality control techniques to provide access and enhance discoverability of collection assets.
  • Develop innovative strategies for metadata transformation and normalization across discovery platforms and data systems. Seek methods for streamlining or automating metadata creation and management, using various tools for metadata manipulation and scripting.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of data management strategies that will support discovery, access, management, and preservation of the libraries analog and digital assets.
  • Participate in research and analysis of next-generation library collections discovery such as data mapping and metadata transformation tasks.
  • Collect and assess data to improve collections management and access to resources.
  • Participate in adapting emerging technologies and data encoding standards to improve discoverability of collections in multiple repositories, catalogs, discovery tools, and knowledgebases.
  • Perform original cataloging and complex copy cataloging in all formats, in a variety of subject areas and languages. Serve as lead cataloger of rare materials and special collections.
  • Contribute to library-wide initiatives; participate in departmental and library-wide activities; serve on library committees and task forces


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited program, or equivalent educational attainment.
  • Professional experience with an emphasis on metadata.
  • Experience with bibliographic tools and metadata practices and standards such as RDA, AACR2, MARC and Dublin Core, authority control; and LC and NLM classification and subject headings.
  • Knowledge of discovery layer technology, data mining, linked data, semantic web development, XML, RDF, and BibFrame.
  • Programming and/or scripting skills commensurate with collection management tasks and goals.
  • Familiarity with proprietary and open source systems, knowledgebases, and repositories, such as Summon and Innovative Interfaces Inc.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with a strong commitment to customer service and teamwork.
  • Demonstrated record of ongoing professional development and contribution, and ability to meet University of Cincinnati Libraries reappointment, promotion and tenure requirements.
  • Physical requirements include thinking analytically, using effective verbal and written communication, remembering details, keyboarding/typing, concentrating on tasks, attending work related meetings and directing others.
