Dean of the College of Law

The University of Cincinnati invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Law. Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Law.

We seek a dean whose vision will build upon the College of Law's history and tradition of educating and inspiring leaders who pursue justice and advance the role of law in society. The fourth oldest continually operating law school in the nation, the College of Law is small, with fewer than four hundred students, and extremely rigorous. Although selective in its admissions, enrollment in the College of Law has increased over the last two years. The faculty is highly productive and creative. In addition to being expert in their respective fields, they are also committed to maintaining a robust and collegial learning environment that fosters diverse and innovative ideas about law in society, builds collaborative relationships, and imparts the knowledge, values, and competencies needed to excel in a changing world. This mission is evident in our curriculum, which blends theory and practice in our centers, programs, and clinics. Our J.D. and LL.M. graduates have distinguished careers in law firms, businesses, state, federal, and foreign governments, nongovernmental organizations, and international institutions, and as judges and elected officials.

As the intellectual and administrative leader of the law school, the next Dean will play a key role in developing new ideas and forging consensus among stakeholders to build upon current and past successes and further strengthen the College in a changing legal market.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Understand the relationship of the College to the University at large, and work effectively and cooperatively to foster that relationship;
  • Articulate, advocate for, and otherwise support academic priorities in line with NEXT Lives Here (the University's strategic direction), furthering the University's status as a world-class research and teaching institution;
  • Conceptualize a vision of the College's future that will motivate the staff and faculty and inspire students; equally important is the ability to articulate this vision in terms of measurable goals and to enlist the support of essential constituencies;
  • Provide effective leadership and active guidance while facilitating success in fulfilling the College's mission as a public law school;
  • Strengthen existing programs and develop new ones to meet the needs of the community;
  • Ensure superior academic programs are delivered by dedicated faculty;
  • Attract and retain staff and faculty of the highest caliber, providing long-term career incentives and an environment conducive to professional development and necessary to recruit and support an outstanding student body;
  • Build strong external relationships, enhancing those among the College, the University, Cincinnati's dynamic and diverse community, and the International arena by engaging in activities designed to raise private support;
  • Engage and collaborate with the legal and business communities of Southwestern Ohio and Northern Kentucky, and extend that collaboration to national and international levels;
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships and interdisciplinary collaboration across the campus;
  • Build active and enduring relationships with College alumni;
  • Take a lead role in pursuing private funding for the College, supported by the University of Cincinnati Foundation;
  • Foster a culture of accountability in which goals are specified, strategies articulated, and results against goals are reported;
  • Demonstrated expertise in/and or clear willingness to engage in fundraising;
  • Proficiency in academic administration, including strategic planning;
  • Act as a visionary academic leader with a demonstrated ability to turn vision into reality and inspire faculty, staff, students, and the community with ambitious but attainable objectives and will build a plan to lead the College toward those objectives. The Dean will have the personal qualities, energy, and ability to advocate for the resources necessary to realize this vision.


REQUIREMENTS

A record as an accomplished scholar or noted contributor to the profession, possessing at minimum a J.D. or equivalent satisfying the requirements for appointment to the College of Law; and administrative experience, preferably at a major research institution similar to the University. The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Fundraising experience and success;

  • An entrepreneurial orientation combined with boldness, imagination and abundant energy;
  • Experience with organizational process improvement and/or professional accreditation;

  • A firm grasp of the opportunities and advantages of the University's urban setting;
  • Successful administrative and budgetary/financial experience;
  • A management style that is emotionally intelligent, inclusive and decisive and provides leadership by example;
  • Proven effectiveness in teambuilding and enabling collaborative engagement that transcends departments, disciplines and initiatives to create sustained success; and
  • Personal qualities of integrity, compassion, collaboration, intellectual curiosity, honesty, fairness, fortitude, patience and perseverance.
