Vice President for Finance and Administration Trea

Skidmore College invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Finance & Administration and Treasurer (VPFA). Possessing strong management skills and financial acumen, the next VPFA will play a significant leadership role in guiding the institution as a whole, working closely with the President, staff within the Division, other members of senior administration, the faculty, and the Board of Trustees in a highly collaborative culture.

Skidmore is a highly selective, nationally ranked liberal arts college, currently enrolling approximately 2,500 students in roughly 40 degree programs, including programs in both traditional liberal arts and pre-professional disciplines. The College’s principal mission is the education of predominantly full-time undergraduates, a diverse population of talented students who are eager to engage in the learning process. Skidmore’s faculty and staff create a challenging yet supportive environment that cultivates students’ intellectual and personal excellence, encouraging them to expand their expectations of themselves while engaging in research, scholarship, and study. In keeping with the College’s founding principle of linking theoretical with applied learning – and its more recent expression, “Creative Thought Matters” – the Skidmore curriculum balances a commitment to the liberal arts with an emphasis on integrated learning and interdisciplinarity, along with preparation for professions, civic leadership, and personal fulfillment.

Skidmore College is committed to being an inclusive campus community and, as an Equal Opportunity Employer, does not discriminate in its hiring or employment practices on the race, color, creed, religion, gender, age, national or ethnic origin, physical or mental disability, military or veteran status, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, genetic information, predisposition or carrier status, domestic violence victim status, familial status or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws.

Skidmore’s campus is located in what was, at the turn of the twentieth century, a beautiful park of summer residences in Saratoga Springs, New York. The region’s many attractions include the Saratoga National Battlefield, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, ten museums, a number of spas, and the famed Saratoga Race Course for thoroughbred horse racing. Set in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, Saratoga Springs is a half-hour drive from the New York State capital at Albany and a three-hour drive from New York City, Boston, and Montreal. The area is also home to a thriving technology sector.

The VPFA serves as the chief financial and business officer for the College. Responsibilities currently include financial planning, revenue and expenditure analysis for decision-making, development and execution of the operating and capital budget of approximately $200 million; supervision of all accounting and control, oversight of debt financing and the College’s investment portfolio, management of banking relationships and payroll. The VPFA also is expected to provide leadership for a broad portfolio of campus support services include physical plant, IT, HR, dinning services, campus safety, onsite child care center, post office, and risk management – a total staff of 290. The VPFA plays a central role in integrating fiscal planning with strategic program planning. The VPFA oversees the College operating budget and endowment.

The College seeks an experienced financial professional with impeccable integrity and a record of achievement and a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible positions. The ideal candidate would hold an MBA or other relevant advanced degree and would demonstrate many of the following: track record of success as a senior financial officer of a complex non-for-profit organization; high-level financial planning, modeling, and analytic skills; strong background in accounting, information technology, and financing capital projects and improvements; track record of excelling at making difficult, timely, and financially responsible decisions; experience with and knowledge of debt management, risk management, and financial audits; understanding of budgeting and finance models at liberal arts-based institutions; ability to effectively present complex financial information to varied audiences; understanding of compensation, benefits, and employee and labor relations; appreciation and understanding of the institutional risk related to the changing environment in higher education; appreciation for the role of shared governance, including the ability to engage with constituents in a consultative and collaborative manner; and demonstrated understanding of how sound financial and administrative management furthers the quality of education and services provided to students, faculty, staff, and other members of the College community.

The search process is currently underway and will continue until the position is filled. Nominations, inquiries, and expressions of interest should be forwarded, in confidence, to:
