Position Summary and Responsibilities The Psychology Department Laboratory Technician oversees various materials used in the Department's teaching labs and research projects, including chemicals and biological and chemical waste, laboratory animals, electronic equipment and software. The Laboratory Technician will also periodically assist laboratory students. Specific duties and required skills are as follows.

  • Transport, prepare, and monitor chemicals and biological and chemical waste for the Psychology Department. This includes disposing of chemical solutions and biological waste according to waste-disposal regulations.
  • Husbandry, transport and monitoring of animals used in laboratory classes and laboratory research projects.
  • Assist Instructors and students in carrying out laboratory techniques including behavioral testing, survival surgery and histology.
  • Assist in insuring that the Department is in compliance with government safety standards and regulations. This includes maintaining and updating documentation regarding the use of animals, biologicals and chemicals in laboratory research. This includes preparing solutions, equipment, and instruments, and testing components used in labs to ensure that they are in working order.
  • Set up, take down, clean and store laboratory equipment after lab classes.
  • Prepare, maintain, and repair (as needed) electronic equipment and computer software used in laboratory classes.
  • Prepare documentation for procedures used in laboratory classes.
  • Assist instructors and students in the use of electronic equipment, computers, and data collection and analysis software in laboratory classes. This includes, but is not limited to, using applications such as SuperLab and E-Prime, and EEG and eye-tracking data acquisition and analysis software.
  • Perform other duties as needed.


The work schedule for this benefits-eligible position is full-time (37.5 hours / week for the academic year (42 weeks/year.)

Qualifications
Associate's degree with emphasis in Natural Sciences required; bachelor's degree in psychology, biopsychology, cognitive science or related field is preferred. Professional experience in a laboratory setting preferred. Specific skills include: Familiarity with basic "wet-lab" procedures and safely working with animals and chemicals. Some familiarity with basis electronics. Proficiency in Excel, and other statistical applications. Ability to master new systems as these become available. Ability to provide direction to student employees.Must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work well within a team environment, but with minimal supervision. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be self-motivated and display initiative in accomplishing tasks, and be a good problem solver. Must be willing to learn new tasks as needed to support the laboratory work of the department.
