College In-House Attorney


Brief Summary:

Marist College is seeking an outstanding lawyer to serve as our first In-House College Attorney. With day to day reporting to the Executive Vice President on operational matters and to the President on matters relevant to institutional or Board of Trustees guidance, the College Attorney will provide counseling and support to senior College leaders on a variety of legal and related issues.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide general legal services and day-to-day guidance to the President's Cabinet.
  • Anticipate and identify legal issues and provide guidance on how these issues may impact current and future institutional policies and initiatives.
  • Draft, review, and guide the development of institutional policies, procedures, regulations, and other legal documents for the approval of the EVP, President, or other assigned executive.
  • Generate, manage, track, and update the College's contracts and agreements.
  • Work with outside counsel to obtain legal opinions or to handle claims and litigation.
  • Keep abreast of compliance and regulatory-related changes and educate College constituents.


Qualifications:

The person selected for this position will be well acquainted with the key issues pertinent to higher education and non-profits, but must be fluent in contract review, editing, drafting, and risk management. She/he will be comfortable working in an energetic, active environment and manage a wide range of legal issues. Requirements include a degree from an ABA accredited law school, admission to the bar in New York, or eligibility to be admitted by motion, and at least three years of relevant legal experience.
