Counselor, Educational Opportunity Program

The Educational Opportunity Program at the State University of New York, College at Plattsburgh is seeking creative, social justice minded, proactive and qualified candidates for a Counselor position. The start date for this position is flexible, but a start date of no later than June 1, 2016 is preferred. Under the direction and supervision of the EOP Director, the EOP Counselor provides academic and personal support for historically disadvantaged students who have diverse talents, strengths, experiences and needs.  This is a full-time, 12-month position with a program encouraging an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened and productive environment and demonstrates sensitivity to and respect for a diverse population. 

Responsibilities include: The successful candidate will provide individual and group counseling as well as programming in the areas of personal, academic and career development for EOP students.  Advisement services (course registration, student record reviews, academic planning, etc.) are an integral component of the position.  The counselor will be expected to maintain accurate and up-to-date records of individual and group counseling sessions.  The successful candidate will also serve as a liaison and/or advocate for program students with campus and community offices and assist in short and long term planning and assessment activities.  A significant component of the position requires facilitating student success through proactive academic advisement and enrichment programming.

Required Qualifications: Bachelors degree from a four-year college or university; Professional experience working in a college or university setting; Knowledge of college student development theory and its application; Demonstrated ability to gather, assess and apply pertinent student information when developing interventions and programs; Experience in academic advising/counseling; Experience with intensive academic intervention programs (e.g. pre-freshman summer programs, academic probation advisement); Experience developing enrichment programs for college students; Demonstrated ability to engage in relationship building and collaboration with professional colleagues; Excellent professional judgment and the capacity to resolve student concerns with discretion, diplomacy, and tact; Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds (ethnically, geographically, educationally and economically); Excellent oral and written communication skills; Valid Driver License; and the willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications: Masters degree in student affairs professional practice, college/higher education counseling, educational leadership, or a related area; Experience with academically at-risk students; Familiarity with the financial aid process; Facility with Banner or a closely related data management system; Experience teaching new student seminars; Demonstrated initiative, energy and enthusiasm; General knowledge of EOP or college-level TRIO programs.

Salary: $44,530, plus excellent benefits.
