Summer Lifeguard

Reports To: Adventure Sports Coach
Position Type: Temporary, Part-Time
Standard Hours: Less than 29 hours/week

Summary
Get ready to spend your summer earning cash, gaining experience, and enjoying the outdoors! As a certified summer lifeguard, your primary responsibility is to maintain a safe swimming environment by enforcing all rules and regulations at Keuka College's Waterfront, Point Neamo. This position assists with our aquatic programs and ensures the safety of patrons by reporting any unsafe conditions and/or faulty equipment to the office and responding to emergencies as needed.

Essential Responsibilities:
• Maintain constant surveillance of patrons at the waterfront; act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
• Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
• Enforces policies, rules, and regulations. Safeguards and regulates conduct of Waterfront patrons.
• Display a high degree of professionalism, leadership, customer service and safety at all times.
• Performs work safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures; operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practice to supervisor.
• Perform various maintenance duties as directed to uphold a clean and safe facility.
• Prepare and maintain appropriate facility inspections, records and activity reports.
• Participate in all in-service training sessions
• Manage equipment rental process; educate patrons on policies, procedures, and proper equipment usage as needed.
• Clean and organize boathouse, equipment, and general waterfront facility.
• Maintain an appropriate fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance, etc.).
• Responsible for ensuring that assigned tasks are completed in compliance with various institutional and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain a professional and courteous attitude at all times towards co-workers, internal and external customers, representing Keuka College, its programs, policies and procedures in a positive and professional manner. Maintain effective working relationships to ensure institution-wide teamwork.
• Attend provided/necessary trainings and other meetings to support effectiveness within the position as required.
• Consistently demonstrate high standards of integrity by supporting the Keuka College mission, vision and values and adhering to institutional policies.
• Maintain high regard for student privacy in accordance with the FERPA privacy policies and procedures.
• Regular and reliable attendance is expected and required.
• Perform other functions as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Prior to employment, you must have acceptable and current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Waterfront, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications.
2. Pre-employment testing of lifeguarding knowledge and skills.
3. Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
4. An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures.
5. The ability to observe and monitor swimmers and safety conditions is vital in this role, so lifeguards should possess excellent observation skills.
6. In many cases, a lifeguard's shift can be relatively uneventful, but a high level of attention to detail and concentration is required throughout the shift to ensure swimmer safety.
7. If a swimmer is in danger, lifeguards need to calmly assess the situation and make critical decisions to provide assistance, so strong judgment and response skills are necessary.
8. Lifeguards need to effectively communicate with visitors and other lifeguards, so strong verbal communication and customer service skills are required.
9. Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
10. Understand and behave with a high level of integrity and complete confidentiality at all times.
11. Ability to be sensitive to and respond to needs/concerns of students, faculty, college staff and the public.
12. Ability to work under pressure with a high tolerance for interruptions, and the ability to work with diverse groups of people.

Physical Requirements:
• Weekend and evening hours required.
• Perform all skills required for Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR certifications and in-service trainings.
• Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time in outside air temperatures and conditions.
• Lifeguards must be strong swimmers who can maneuver and navigate in the water even while carrying another person.
• Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch.
• Outdoor weather conditions with little to no temperature control; is routinely exposed to the
sun; may be exposed to extreme heat, cold, wind and rain; works on uneven and/or slippery
surfaces and is periodically exposed to hazardous conditions/situations.
