HEOP Counselor

Reports To: Director of HEOP

Position Type: Full Time

Standard Hours: 40 hours / week

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary:

The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program is housed under the division of Enrollment Management and Student Development. The primary charge of this position is enhancing opportunities for student success and persistence. The general responsibilities include, but are not limited to, one-on-one work with students to ensure retention, student engagement and success. This position will provide personal, academic, financial, and occupational counseling, support and guidance to students. The collecting, tracking, and assessment of data for reporting and retention purposes are required.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Assume a counseling caseload of HEOP and other at-risk students and maintain complete and accurate caseload counseling records/notes and student progression.
  • Provide coordinated care efforts of students through on-going collaboration and communication with faculty, tutors, staff, administrators, and community constituents and organizations.
  • Collaborate with relevant faculty and staff to support student advocacy, persistence, and progression to graduation.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and internal and external support services, assist students in the transition and adjustment to college/campus life, and provide necessary referrals to other college departments and areas to obtain needed information.
  • Offer one-on-one instruction on drop-in and appointment basis for all students in need of study skills/time management skills.
  • Work closely with the staff of the Office of Student Success, Admissions and Financial Aid.
  • Assist the HEOP Director in the planning, implementation, operation, and assessment of the mandatory four-week Keuka College Summer Institute (KCSI).
  • Assist the Director with the preparation of HEOP, institutional, state and federal reports.
  • Provide personal, academic and financial aid counseling and guidance to students.
  • Assist in the financial verification process to determine the income eligibility of HEOP applicants.
  • Assist in the interviewing and selection of students for the HEOP program.
  • Participate in programs generated by HEOP, Student Success and the campus community.
  • Attend New Student Orientation and various admissions programs and assist in conducting informational sessions for parents and students.
  • Responsible for ensuring that assigned tasks are completed in compliance with various institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous attitude at all times towards co-workers, internal and external customers, representing Keuka College, its programs, policies, and procedures in a positive and professional manner. Maintain effective working relationships to ensure institution-wide teamwork.
  • Attend provided/necessary training and other meetings to support effectiveness within the position as required.
  • Consistently demonstrate high standards of integrity by supporting the Keuka College mission, vision, and values and adhering to institutional policies.
  • Maintain a high regard for student privacy in accordance with the FERPA privacy policies and procedures.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is expected and required.
  • Perform other functions as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.
  2. A minimum of one year of experience working in a higher educational counseling setting with individuals from diverse backgrounds preferred.
  3. This position may require driving; therefore, a valid driver's license, and successful DMV check is required.
  4. Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  5. Understand and behave with a high level of integrity and complete confidentiality at all times.
  6. Ability to be sensitive to and respond to the needs/concerns of students, faculty, college staff and the public.
  7. Ability to work under pressure with a high tolerance for interruptions, and the ability to work with diverse groups of people.

Physical Requirements:
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
