Assistant Director of Student Development (Orientation)


Position Description: Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Student Development , he/she will have the primary responsibility for a comprehensive year-round New Student Orientation Program and Activities, Welcome Week and Family Weekend activities, and other efforts designed to strengthen the connection between students/families and the University. He/She will collaborate with other University departments to assist entering first-year students and transfers in making the transition from their previous environment to the diverse academic, intellectual, and social culture of the University. The Assistant Director will also supervise the Coordinator of Student Development , primarily responsible for New Student Orientation, Parent Orientation/Family Weekend programming. The incumbent will also assist the Associate Dean for Student Development with supervision of other student programs and initiatives to strengthen the development of the first-year student experience and parent programs. This position requires the incumbent to be able to work autonomously and make decisions that will impact the programs under their supervision.

Responsibilities:
    • Serve as primary coordinator for a wide range of new student programs including Freshman, Transfer, International , Resident, and Graduate student Orientation programs
    • Support the Associate Dean with the overall management and operation of first-year and parent programming
    • Hire and train orientation staff
    • Provide front-line supervision of each orientation program; in addition to administrative support to new students and parents
    • Manage the day-to day operations of a $700K budget
    • Coordinate, implement, and supervise the New Student Convocation, Red Carpet Week, and Family Weekend activities
    • Supervise one professional staff member and several student staff members, including recruitment, selection, and training of staff members
    • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to design, update, and print all materials for first-year and family programs
    • Collaboration with the Office of Admissions, University Freshman Center, College Deans' Offices, Residence Life and other University departments to incorporate the necessary components related to new student transition
  • Provide statistical data, assessment, and evaluation of all first-year and family programs


  • Coordination, compilation, and reporting of statistical data regarding all new student programs
  • Maintain the Orientation Database through the Student Information System, (Banner)
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's degree with a minimum of five years professional experience in a combination of college student affairs, event planning, and/or transition programming.

Preferred: A Master's degree with 3 years experience and supervisory experience, evidence of strong organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy and/or knowledge of database/information systems extremely helpful and the ability to establish relationships and collaborate with faculty, staff and relate effectively with students.
