Position/Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director for Student Wellness, the successful candidate will direct, plan, and administer the activities of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services at Ithaca College. Oversee the delivery of comprehensive counseling services and ensure development and implementation of appropriate educational programs and services promoting developmental, psychological and mental health services as appropriate to the Ithaca College community. Coordinate the efforts of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services with other Student Affairs and Campus Life offices and staff to facilitate student success. Serve as a professional liaison and consultant with appropriate administrative, counseling, and medical personnel and parents.

Position/Job Responsibilities

1. Oversee the administration of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services; direct, plan and coordinate activities, programs and services of the Center. Guide and direct the professional and support staff assigned to the Center. Plan and direct meetings and provide clinical supervision to staff for service provision and for New York State licensure. Develop and refine the center policies and procedures manual.

2. Develop, demonstrate, and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful College community. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion as a college priority, communicate to employees an expectation of behavior that is civil and inclusive when interacting with all staff, faculty, students and visitors and promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment.

3. Provide psychotherapy and counseling to students, individually and in-groups, to help them understand themselves and their environment, and to overcome academic, vocational, and personal problems. Develop and monitor systems of care delivered by Center professional staff. Develop and manage the provision of structured and therapy group counseling.

4. Develop, provide, and manage crisis counseling and counseling services for students with acute psychological problems, and work closely with the professional staffs and the Medical Services Director in the provision of these services. Provide 24-hour counseling coverage to meet the emergency needs of students. Oversee the development and direction of a campus-wide crisis response team and serve as consultant to the College administration in crisis/emergency situations.

5. Oversee and coordinate the referral process and policy for students needing specialized and/or long-term treatment.

6. Review and oversee, in collaboration with the Executive Director for Student Wellness and the Medical Services Director, the processing of non-academic student withdrawals and leaves of absence; as well as the processing of academic and student service requests for students with special needs.

7. Assess the needs of student population on campus regarding counseling/education on a regular basis; compile and disseminate to appropriate college administrators the results of surveys, and/or interviews. Respond to parent concerns regarding students.

8. Oversee the efforts of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services in developing programs, workshops, training sessions, and classroom presentations designed to promote mental health utilization on campus; oversee and direct marketing efforts to reach the broadest audience; oversee and maintain development and maintenance of the center webpage.

9. Serve as professional liaison to consultants, including psychiatrists, medical doctors, or specific programs or organizations. Serve as representative voice for and to the College regarding mental health issues and the development needs of students, and the professional practice of counseling and mental health services for students.

10. Direct a training program for clinical graduate students in mental health disciplines, contingent upon availability of qualified trainer.

11. Provide strategic leadership for the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services in a changing national climate of service delivery. Plan and conduct research and prepare operational reports and analyses identifying current issues and trends in service delivery and the development, psychological needs of students; recommend appropriate programs and solutions. Establish long and short-range departmental goals and objectives and devise methods to improve the overall effectiveness of programs offered.

12. Assess resource needs and develop budget recommendations, monitor and reconcile expenditures; oversee acquisition and use of current technology and capital equipment; monitor physical facilities and coordinate needed repairs and renovations; obtain and oversee use of grant funding for programs.

13. Oversee personnel actions including hiring, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers, performance evaluations, and vacation schedules.

14. Ensure compliance with relevant federal and state laws. Assume responsibility for IACS accreditation reports and provide leadership in application of contemporary standards of practice in clinical and psycho educational services. Assume responsibility for maintaining ethical standards within the Counseling Center, which are consistent with the American Psychologist Association ( APA ) Ethical Principles for Psychologists.

Position/Job Qualifications

Earned doctorate degree in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, social work, counseling, or a related discipline. At least 6 years of post-licensure clinical experience, with demonstrated progressive administrative or leadership experience in a college or university counseling center. NY State professional license to practice in the field of mental health and use a professional title in New York State or; licensed in another state and eligible for NY State license within 6 months of hire. Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for working collaboratively with colleagues in the Counseling Center and across the institution; demonstrated clinical skills in supervision, assessment and short-term psychotherapy; experience in counseling center administration or similar activities and proven managerial and supervisory abilities; ability to cultivate an inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment; ability to treat all people equitably and with a sensitivity and awareness to cultural difference; demonstrated ability to hold others accountable for behavior that is supportive of a community that is diverse and inclusive are required. Demonstrated sensitivity to diversity and inclusion issues.
