Coordinator, Disability Services

Hobart and William Smith Colleges cultivates an inclusive and supporting learning community that values the diverse learning styles of our students. The office of Disability Services in the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is committed to providing students with disabilities access to HWS programs and activities. We strive to provide the appropriate individualized accommodations necessary for students with disabilities to succeed.

The Coordinator works to facilitate academic accommodations for students with disabilities in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and College policies and procedures. The Coordinator provides administrative oversight, advocacy, education, and leadership pertaining to disability services.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as point of contact for incoming students with documented disabilities.
  • Track, report, and maintain disability supporting documentation; track the number of students with specific disabilities and accommodations requested and approved.
  • Review student documentation to determine eligibility of students for accommodation and appropriately communicates information about services and accommodations.
  • Coordinate the implementation of approved accommodations for students with disabilities and follow up to assess effectiveness.
  • Partner with colleagues across campus and serve as a resource for other campus. constituents relating to disability and accessibility.
  • Provide liaison and consultative services for faculty to meet the educational needs of registered students with disabilities.
  • Partners with CTL staff to ensure appropriate testing and note-taking accommodations.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate educational opportunities for faculty and staff regarding disability issues.
  • Act as a liaison to other agencies serving students with disabilities.
  • Assist the Director and all other CTL staff members with the daily functioning of the Center and with writing reports regarding its usage and effectiveness.
  • Maintain knowledge of accessibility and disability services best practices for higher education.
  • Perform other tasks as agreed upon by CTL professional staff.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience working with students with disabilities or advanced graduate work with experience providing disability services in post-secondary education setting.
  • Discretion, sound judgment and strong interpersonal skills in dealing with students, faculty, administrators, parents, handling confidential information, and communicating with all campus constituencies.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing clinical documentation, conducting interactive/iterative processes for determining accommodations and providing such accommodations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current state and federal law and regulation related to the ADA, Section 504 and of federal regulatory requirements for educational institutions receiving federal assistance.
  • Superior attention to detail, problem-solving skills, organizational skills, and electronic, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of diversity and the ability to interact with a diverse population.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work as a team member to build strong working relationships across campus and in the broader community.
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of various office practices & procedures, and competency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage multiple, on-going and complex disability-related student matters.
  • Experience teaching and/or working specifically with students with disabilities in post-secondary institutions preferred.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology.

OTHER INFORMATION:

This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible administrative salaried/exempt position. Typical hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with some occasional nights and weekends. The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. The benefit package includes but is not limited to: 20 days of vacation each year; 10 paid holidays; medical, dental, and vision insurances; long-term disability coverage; life insurance; and retirement benefits. This position is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
