Job Description:
The Coordinator of Opportunity Programs at Alfred State oversees the delivery of the support services for the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) as well as providing support and guidance for our Alfred State Opportunity Program (ASOP) and other at-risk student initiatives.  The primary function of the Coordinator is to foster student engagement, and support retention and graduation efforts, for the Educational Opportunity Program.  This individual will collaborate with key areas regarding selection of qualified students, lead the counseling and support staff, assist with budgeting, and be responsible for implementing an energetic summer program.  Additionally, this position plays a critical and supportive role in strengthening departmental efforts to promote undergraduate student success for other college populations needing additional support services.  

This 12 month position reports to the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs in the Student Success Center and works collaboratively with a team of academic success professionals. The college supports an innovative and holistic approach to providing students with the assistance, guidance, advisement and resources necessary to be successful.  Alfred State is committed to building a culturally diverse and pluralistic staff in a multi-cultural environment.  Active participation and leadership in on-campus activities related to the support and retention of new and continuing undergraduate students is essential. 

Requirements:
Required qualifications:

  • Master's degree (in education, educational psychology, counseling, higher education or related field), or a master's degree plus adequate directly-related previous experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the developmental issues (academic, social, intellectual and ethical) of college-age students.
  • Must be a proactive thinker with problem solving ability.
  • Must be results-oriented and able to organize, prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects with little or no supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, presentation, and written).
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and faculty.
  • Enthusiastic interest in coordinating and implementing academic success initiatives, especially summer programs, for opportunity programs.
  • Must embrace the use of technology (excel, information and data management).
  • Experience with budgeting and/or record keeping.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed; some evening and weekend work may be required at key points in time.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • PhD or ABD in educational psychology, higher education, or related field a plus.
  • Personal or professional experience in opportunity program delivery (EOP, HEOP, TRIO, SEEK, etc.)
  • Educational study of learning, curriculum design, student development, academic advising, or counseling is desirable.
  • Experience with admission or financial aid, is a plus.
  • Experience working directly with students in a college/university setting.
  • Experience involving first generation college students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Experience coordinating programs for at-risk students in a higher education setting.
  • Teaching experience, or interest in teaching college success courses, desired.
  • Interest or experience with data collection, analysis and interpretation skills, is a plus.
  • Interest or experience in grant writing, a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
