Position Summary:

Monmouth University seeks an experienced, motivated, visionary and collaborative leader to serve as the inaugural Director of the Monmouth University Institute for Health and Wellness (IHW). Established as key initiative in the University's new Strategic Plan - https://www.monmouth.edu/strategicplan, the IHW is intended to serve Monmouth University communities and public interests as a key local resource and forum for education, research, and collaboration on issues of human health and wellness delivered through scholarship, supported programs, community engagement, and partnerships.

The IHW was created to position the University to play a leading role in supporting anticipated regional and national healthcare needs and trends, new models of care, and forces impacting the evolution of healthcare for individuals and populations through increased emphasis on wellness, preventative medicine and public health initiatives. The IHW will have transformative impacts on how we teach, train and professionally develop our students. The Director will lead the IHW from inception, providing an exciting and unique opportunity to develop the Institute, and establish and implement a shared vision for the Institute.

The Director will be expected to establish the IHW as an essential internal and external resource and umbrella for supporting and promoting all University activities and initiatives related to health and wellness. The IHW will help the University leverage and grow existing resources across campus including a broad range of strong undergraduate and graduate programs in the health sciences, plans for expanding interprofessional education in health sciences by adding new graduate programs, growing faculty expertise, and through external partnerships. In addition, the IHW will work collaboratively with the Monmouth University Polling Institute and the Urban Coast Institute (UCI) two well-established and nationally recognized Centers of Distinction.

Curricular engagement for the Institute is expected to include collaboration across the entire campus to address issues of health and wellness and academic programming. This will include working with administrators and faculty to identify priorities and implement strategies for curricular and extracurricular engagement of the IHW, and for facilitating development of new interdisciplinary degree programs related to the health sciences such as the Master in Public Health (MPH).

The IHW will seek external funding and partnerships in support of faculty and student research and collaboration including: policy research to inform the public and community constituents, practice and research in population-based health issues, and clinical research engagement in collaboration with local healthcare organizations. The IHW will be a conduit for engaging local and national thought leaders and expertise in health and wellness through research collaborations, fellowships and visiting or affiliate faculty appointments among other opportunities.

The IHW will interface and collaborate extensively with the healthcare community locally and in the region. It will build new relationships and expand existing relationships and partnerships with area hospital systems, healthcare organizations, community-based agencies and others to support the educational and employment needs and missions of our community partners, and to serve as a resource for organizing and hosting conferences, symposia and public events related to health and wellness, and for informing and disseminating information about public health issues.

The Director will be the thought and action leader to advance University-wide efforts to establish the IHW as an essential resource and regional leader for University initiatives in health and wellness. He/she will be expected to provide strategic leadership, planning, development and implementation of initiatives and activities to advance the mission of the IHW. The Director must be a dynamic, energetic and innovative team leader who can engage faculty, administrative leadership, and external partners to develop and implement an agenda to foster success of the IHW. The Director will also be responsible for securing external funding for programmatic support of the Institute through grants and contracts and fundraising. It is expected that the Director will work with a Steering Committee comprised of key stakeholders on campus including Deans and faculty, and external experts including potential collaborators.

The Director will report directly to the Provost. Review of applications will begin on May 1 but the position will remain open until filled.

The anticipated start date for this position is on or following July 1, 2017.

Other Requirements:

A terminal degree or a graduate or professional degree in a discipline or interdisciplinary areas relevant to the IHW but not limited to a MBA, MPH, MD, or PhD.

Five years of demonstrated successful leadership experience.

A strong track record in research and/or research administration. Successful experience in securing external funding through competitively-funded grants, cultivating donor relationships and fundraising for research and/or programmatic activities.

Experience building diverse partnerships, on and off-campus.

Self-directed, collaborative leader with a strong work ethic. Innovative and creative problem solver, willing to take calculated risks.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in an academic environment or collaborative experience working with an academic institution.Effective and collegial work experience with other leaders from a range of academic disciplines. Strong financial and budgetary experience.Experience with interdisciplinary and cross-school, collaborative program building. Evidence of fostering community engagement and outreach.
