Asst. Dean-Students/Director-Intercultural Affairs

Summary: Provides administrative leadership to the Office of Intercultural Affairs (OIA), its staff and operations, educational programs, resources and services. Serves on the leadership teams of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Office of the Dean of Students to foster collaboration and strategic alignment through educational programming, student advising and advocacy, strategic planning, policy development, budgeting, assessment and reporting to the campus community.  Supports the university’s efforts to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students and has demonstrated experience and progressive responsibility for supporting underrepresented populations.  

Essential Functions:

Collaborative Leadership:

  • Provides strategic vision, cultivate, administer, and manage a comprehensive multicultural/intercultural affairs program serving the Wake Forest University community.
  • Consults with campus units to direct implementation of the institutional InterCross Cultural Capacity (IC3) Program to foster the development of an intercultural mindset among Wake Forest students.
  • Works with campus partners to assess community needs and designs, implements, and assesses the effectiveness of university diversity and cultural competence training programs and learning opportunities.
  • Develops strategies to enhance student learning and promotes the University’s diversity and inclusion goals.
  • Supports diversity and inclusion needs assessment and initiatives for the Office of the Dean of Students and Division of Campus Life in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Advises the Dean of Students in areas of strategic planning, policy development, budgeting, reporting and programming to build and promote a sense of belonging and connection in the community for all students and a more interculturally aware and inclusive campus.

Student Engagement:

  • Collaborates with multiple University constituencies to develop, supervise and assess programs and initiatives designed to enhance the experience of students from underrepresented groups.
  • Works collaboratively with staff in the Office of the Dean of the College, the University Registrar, Institutional Research, the Office of Financial Aid and Campus Life to create early warning systems in order to increase student retention.
  • Partners with Global Programs and Studies, the LIAISE Team, and other campus partners to facilitate international student inclusion and engagement.
  • Serves as primary contact for Office of Admissions recruitment events with an emphasis on underrepresented groups.
  • Functions as part of Dean of Students team that provides caring outreach, problem-solving, and referral services for students and their families experiencing personal, medical, or mental health-related crises. In times of crisis intervention, work may require night and weekend availability.

Departmental Management:

  • Leads and develops the OIA staff in effective mentoring and advising strategies for University students with an emphasis on underrepresented groups.
  • Develops and manages the departmental budget and provides overall operational planning for the Office of Intercultural Affairs.
  • Conducts regular planning and assessment to increase effectiveness of intercultural and diversity education initiatives, student retention, and satisfaction
  • Partners with the Office of Advancement to develop fundraising strategies through Intercultural Affairs Gifts line.
  • Develops and promotes relationships with multicultural alumni affinity groups.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, student personnel, counseling, or related field and three years of related post graduate professional work experience in student service and program development.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Doctorate in higher education administration, student personnel, counseling, or related field
  • Strong relationship building skills working with individuals from diverse cultures.
  • A thought leader with influence in the areas of multicultural and intercultural affairs, assessment of diversity efforts and cultural competency education.
  • Ability to effectively resolve conflict and manage crisis and emergency situations and ability to foster a cooperative environment.
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of the needs of diverse student populations with an emphasis on those from underrepresented groups.
  • Ability to promote collaboration, teamwork and involve stakeholders in the decision making process.
  • Knowledge of college student development.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management.
  • Experienced supervisory skills.
  • Proven knowledge of strategic planning and vision development.
  • Experience advising and counseling students.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessment and evaluation.
  • Proven commitment to diversity, equal opportunity and the academic, intellectual and social development of all students.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

 Accountabilities:

  • Supervision and leadership for Office of Intercultural Affairs staff.
  • Responsible for the development and management of the departmental budget.
