Assistant Dean, Office of Career and Professional Development

Summary: The Assistant Dean for Career and Professional Development is the leader and manager of the Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD) team which serves as chief career and professional development support for students and recent graduates at Wake Forest University School of Law, with primary focus on Juris Doctorate (JD) students.

The selected candidate will be:
  • Capable and driven to provide leadership and direction to the OCPD staff, while motivating and inspiring the team to reach beyond traditional responsibilities, processes and ways of thinking to achieve measureable team and law school objectives, standards, and goals.
  • A hands-on, proactive manager committed to building, inspiring and equipping the larger law school community, including faculty, staff, alumni and students, with the skills and knowledge to support law students in their career and professional development. Through this community, our unique culture embraces and supports career and professional development as a mission-critical component of the Wake Forest University Law experience.
  • A representative of Wake Forest University Law in the external career professional community (i.e. associations and advisory boards) to reinforce the strength of our law school graduates.

Essential Functions:
  • Manages the professional and career development team to deliver relevant and effective professional and career development guidance, contacts, communications, programs, resources, and services for students and recent graduates.
  • Manages strategic initiatives to assist students in developing and implementing career plans for summer employment and post-graduate employment or fellowship opportunities.
  • Manages and implements required comprehensive Professional Development course as a key component of the first year JD curriculum.
  • Develops and builds partnerships with OCPD colleagues, as well as faculty, staff, administrators, board members, employers, and alumni to achieve the goals and objectives of the professional and career development team.
  • Nurtures existing employer relationships and oversees development of potential employer relationships with attorneys and hiring managers both within and outside of the Wake Forest University alumni network.
  • Manages partnerships with the law school development and alumni office to promote strong employer relationships, collaboration on alumni events, and educational communications.
  • Oversees data collection and statistical reporting to accrediting bodies, including American Bar Association (ABA), and outside entities, such as NALP (National Association of Legal Professionals) and US News.
  • Represents, advocates for, and promotes the OCPD and Wake Forest University at relevant professional and career industry conferences, associations and advisory boards, as well as with key constituents at the law school.
  • Manages the OCPD team with regard to individual professional development, team building and positive engagement/morale.
  • Oversees OCPD operating budget.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • JD degree with five years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience and understanding of career advising, counseling, and professional development principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in program development and management
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Powerpoint, Symplicity, software applications for career and professional development offices and database management.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with social media (i.e. Linked In, Facebook, and Instagram).
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
  • Ability to develop and maintain record-keeping systems and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit hardcopy and on-line materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop rapport with employers to increase the number of job and internship opportunities for students and graduates.
  • Ability to ensure that applicants from Wake Forest University Law receive full consideration regarding employment opportunities.
  • Ability to meet the requirements of the University's automobile insurance.
