Director of Swain Center

Brief Summary of Work for this Position:      

The Director of the Swain Center has oversight of the executive and professional education programs and economic services that the David and Diane Swain Center provide to the community including managing the center strategy, identifying and pursuing growth opportunities, managing program resources, and overseeing the quality of program delivery. The director creates and directs a wide range of activities related to professional, executive, and economic development programs and activities, including events. Directs the marketing and sales function, maintains and develops corporate client relationships, and ensures the programs are successful. The director works closely with program educators (including UNCW faculty) to develop courses and materials, and is accountable for ensuring participation, positive financial performance, and continued center growth. The director develops and manages the marketing and communication strategy for the Swain Center including collaborating with campus and external partners. The director delivers presentations, conducts seminars, and participates in meetings with administration, clients, external vendors or advisors and coordinates the delivery of programs, course materials, evaluations, participant requests, and other logistics.

Minimum Requirements         

Master’s Degree and a minimum of eight years of progressive experience working with executives in an academic or business setting.  Exceptional communication and organization skills.  Skilled in strategic planning and exercise strong presenting skills.  Demonstrated evidence of growing business and organizations.

Preferred Qualifications         

Background in business development and marketing strongly encouraged, as well as expertise in educational program design. Experience in a higher education environment beneficial.

Minimum of 8 years leading and managing an organization at the senior executive level. In addition, qualified candidates will have proven relationship sales and marketing acumen and an ability to grow a profitable professional business unit that focuses on C-suite decision makers and senior leadership clientele. A PhD is preferred.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:     

The H. David and Diane Swain Center for Business and Economic Services emphasizes outreach into the private and business community to meet the needs of North Carolina. Its activities include providing training for the region’s workforce, forecasting the economy, and partnering in projects with students and faculty across campus. UNCW’s mission statement dedicates the Swain Center to “the integration of teaching and mentoring with research and service . . . distinctive student involvement in faculty scholarship . . . (and to) enriching the quality of life through scholarly community engagement in such areas as . . . the economy.”

The Swain Center has three main areas of responsibility: 1) offering executive and professional education programs in business, 2) serving as a source of economic and business services related to Southeast North Carolina, and 3) leading regional engagement efforts for the Cameron School of Business.
