DENTAL - PUBLIC HEALTH DENTISTRY

Job Description: The faculty of Public Health Dentistry (PHD) in the School of Dental Medicine contributes to the PHD education and research of the dental school. The position reports directly to the Division Director of Dental Public Health, who reports to the Chair of Foundational Sciences and Associate Dean for Research. The position works in close cooperation with the Offices of Research, Extramural Affairs, Clinical Affairs, and Dental Education and Informatics to support the School's programs and initiatives. In addition, the position works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and other components of the University of North Carolina East Carolina School of Dental Medicine, Community Service Learning Centers, as well as local/regional educational, research, public health, and clinical programs.

The position participates in the development and implementation of the PHD curriculum taught to the dental students and in the School's residency programs, in close collaboration with School of Dental Medicine departments and offices. The position also participates in the hiring, mentoring and professional development of the faculty and staff.

Specific duties include:

Working closely with the Division Director for Public Health Dentistry, the Chair of Foundational Sciences and the Associate Dean for Research, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, and the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics in curriculum development and implementation of PHD related to general and pediatric dentistry; Working closely with the Chair of Foundational Sciences and the Associate Dean for the Office of Research in the development and implementation of the clinical and academic components of the electronic dental record (Axium) to maximize the collection and analysis of epidemiological data; Working closely with the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics and other informatics personnel to optimize the use of technology to support the teaching of research programs; Participates in PHD didactic, research, and clinical activities with the Division Director of Dental Public Health, and the Assistant Deans for Dental Education and Informatics and Educational Support and Faculty Development, and the Associate Deans for Research, Clinical Affairs and Planning and Extramural Affairs; Participates actively in academic programs related to PHD in the School and at the Community Services Learning Centers in close cooperation with the Division Director of Dental Public Health; Conducts research and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion; Develops and deliver state-of-the-art continuing education programs related to PHD; Coordinates of accreditation and other program documentation as needed; Performs assignments given by the Division Director of Dental Public Health, the Chair of Foundational Sciences and Associate Dean for Research, and the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine; Attends meetings and represents the School in internal and external venues as requested by the Division Director of Dental Public Health; Represents the School to external constituencies as appropriate.


Minimum Qualifications: DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from an appropriately accredited institution in dental education.

Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina.

American or Canadian Board certification in Dental Public Health or board eligible.

Broad knowledge of issues in dental education and dental public health

Commitment to and evidence of team participation in planning and to identify and resolve problems.

Commitment to conducting research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.
