Organizational Unit Overview

The School of Art and Design provides a multidisciplinary approach to art and design that provides opportunities for students to develop their creative and critical thinking abilities by thinking through making. The School currently enrolls more than 500 students in twelve areas across four degrees. The School of Art and Design is the most comprehensive and largest BFA Art program in University of North Carolina system and has been continuously accredited by NASAD since 1962. The School has over 40 full-time faculty and is located in the Jenkins Fine Arts Center, a 142,000-square foot facility with specialized equipment, tools, and technology for the School’s 14 disciplines—animation/interactive design, art education, art history, film and video production, ceramics, glass, graphic design, illustration, metal design, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and textile design. From computer labs, a digital loom, CNC routers, and laser cutters to a wood shop, foundry, letterpress shop, black and white dark room and beyond, the School’s facilities are comprehensive and available to faculty and students who think, make, and work across the School’s disciplines.

Job Duties

The School of Art and Design at East Carolina University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position in illustration, beginning August 2018. This position will primarily teach undergraduate students within the illustration concentration of the multidisciplinary BFA in Art. The position may also occasionally teach graduate level courses. School of Art and Design faculty teach 3 three-credit courses per semester. Additional responsibilities include curriculum development, participating in recruitment for undergraduate students, engaging in service to the illustration concentration, School, College, University, community, and profession, and collaborating with other art faculty (e.g., animation/interactive design, graphic design, film, and painting/drawing) on curriculum and beyond. The illustration concentration works closely with the painting/drawing concentration as well as other concentrations within the School of Art and Design. The illustration concentration is committed to teaching students to successfully communicate concepts visually for a variety of applied contexts. In tandem with the continual development of conceptualizing abilities, students are exposed to a variety of illustration mediums from the traditional to new media. The ultimate goal is a competitive portfolio of work that reflects the student’s unique visual style and conceptual voice.

 

Minimum Education/Experience

MFA or related terminal degree in illustration or related field from an accredited institution is required. Candidates must have a record of professional illustration practice and evidence of potential to produce nationally recognized illustration scholarship/creative activity. Candidates must also demonstrate professional-level competency with current digital technology (including but not limited to Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) relevant to illustration. Evidence of professional communication, collaboration, organizational, and time-management skill is required.

 

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

It is preferred that candidate candidates have demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate classes through a record of college-level teaching as instructor of record. Demonstrated mastery of traditional and digital media relevant to illustration is preferred. Preferred candidates will demonstrate their ability to connect ECU students and the illustration program to the illustration and design industries and contemporary artists in the field. Preferred candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the history of illustration.
