PARALEGAL / RECORDS OFFICER

Job Description: Reporting to the University Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs or a designated attorney in the office, the Records Officer will respond to public records requests and perform similar document production work to include reviewing records responsive to a request, applying privacy laws in identifying confidential information in public records that may not be disclosed, and redacting confidential information from records requested. The Records Officer will track receipt of such requests and delivery of responses and will draft related correspondence. The Records Officer will assure that University policies and practices appropriately recognize and address protected confidential employee, student, and other institutional records, data and information. The position will also coordinate basic contract in-take and review, communicate with campus units about review progress, and maintain a database regarding contracts received. As needed, the position will assist with organization of materials and logistical needs in preparation for hearings and reviewing and responding to discovery requests; issue and track litigation hold notices; provide assistance in tracking status, editing, and posting in the ECU Policy Manual policies, regulations and rules; and occasionally provide back-up support for administrative staff with basic office assignments such as answering the phone. Requires compliance with the professional conduct and ethics expectations of a legal office, including but not limited to, maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information; ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a small office environment; and ability to communicate professionally and effectively with individuals from the campus community and the public in connection with document requests. This is a 1.00 FTE (40 hours per week) permanent position.


Minimum Qualifications: Completion of an accredited paralegal program; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

This position is subject to the Career Banding Salary Administration Plan. If candidates are not identified at the Journey level, management may consider candidates at a lower competency level. Pay will be commensurate with applicant's competencies as well as budget, equity, and market considerations.

Salary Grade Equivalent: 69 (for reduction-in-force priority purposes only)
