East Carolina University invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. This administrator reports to the Chancellor and is responsible for leading and ensuring academic quality across the institution.
East Carolina University (ECU) enjoys a proud heritage and record of contribution since its founding in 1907. ECU is the third largest in the University of North Carolina (UNC) system, which consists of the state's 16 degree-granting public institutions. Named one of the best colleges in the Southeast region by the Princeton Review, ECU is among those deemed “Best in the Southeast” based on the quality of its academic programs. The University is located in a residential community in Greenville, NC on 1,400 acres, with six million square feet of academic, research and residential space.
The Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs chairs and works collaboratively with the Academic Council (Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and the Research Officer) to recommend academic priorities, oversee appropriate resource allocation, ensure that the institution is mission-driven and responsive to the University of North Carolina System, develop strong academic leadership across the University, and verify that a strong, routinized system of academic evaluation is in place.
As an essential component of the Chancellor’s leadership team and as the Chief Academic Officer, the Provost represents the University across the UNC system and represents the Chancellor during any absences. The selected candidate is expected to be a significant contributor to academic policy across East Carolina University as well as at the System level. Administratively, the Provost is directly responsible for leadership and resource allocation in the Division of Academic Affairs. The Provost and the Academic Council are the primary liaisons with the Faculty Senate, its committees and all shared governance processes. The Provost oversees all hiring, evaluation and program review within the Division of Academic Affairs.
The Provost oversees nine colleges within the division and is responsible for their growth, quality and responsiveness to the ECU mission. Among the most important responsibilities is to ensure strong leadership in every college and school. Numerous other significant units report to the Provost including: the Joyner Library, Institutional Planning, Assessment and Research, Enrollment Services, Equity and Diversity, Undergraduate Studies, and International Affairs.
The successful candidate must have a terminal degree and a record of progressive academic achievement. The Provost at East Carolina University will have a strong and balanced record of scholarship, sufficient for appointment within the division as a tenured faculty member and at the rank of Professor; strong teaching, service and community engagement; diverse and successful academic leadership; an understanding and the ability to articulate academic change and the driving forces that create change in public universities; strategic planning and the execution of a strategic plan; demonstrated commitment to shared governance; resource allocation and priority-setting; faculty and staff recruitment and retention with proven experience in all aspects of recruitment, personnel management and performance evaluation; institutional planning, assessment, and accreditation; promoting innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship; and, collaboration in creating solutions, planning and decision making.
