DIRECTOR OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS

Job Description: This position serves as the Director for Student Activities and Organizations. The individual in this position assist in supporting the university's academic objectives with programs, resources, and activities designed in collaboration with members of the ECU faculty. This position also seeks to contribute to the development of the whole individual by fostering in each student a deeper appreciation of the importance of life-long learning, individual responsibility, and human diversity. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice. The secondary purpose is to develop or support programming and initiatives that expand student awareness of practices and beliefs of various cultural groups.

The Director provides direction and acts as a liaison to co-curricular programs and initiatives such as Plunge into Purple, Pirate Palooza, Family Weekend, Homecoming, Midnight Madness, Senior Celebration as well as other programs and initiatives that support the collaboration between Academic & Student Affairs; The Director also provides oversight to the department's budget and personnel matters. He/She develops cost projections for programs to aid with budget development. He/She determines funds to be allocated in formulating the departmental budget. The Director approves all expenditure requests generated by the program staff and ensures that deficit spending does not occur; The Director has the general responsibility for coordinating support services for programs sponsored by Co-Curricular Programs and that adequate personnel and equipment are available to support program needs; The Director serves as a consultant to other university and non-university organizations in their programming/collaboration efforts. He/She advises such groups on matters pertaining to contracting events, technical arrangements, publicity and promotions, and event management. The Director maintains resource information on various attractions and entertainment bureaus which can be made available to various groups desiring such information; The Director provides a program of instruction, training, and observation for interns from various academic departments who participate in internships within Mendenhall Student Center. He/She completes a series of work assignments for the interns and evaluates their performance at the conclusion of the internship; The Director provides staff with ongoing coaching and counseling when necessary. Performance problem areas are noted and dealt with immediately. In the event that an employee has a job-related or personal problem adversely affecting his/her work, the director counsels that employee to help him or her to develop an action plan to overcome or minimize the problem. If the problem cannot be minimized or alleviated, or if an employee, when given adequate direction and counseling, fails to follow prescribed policies and procedures, the director must take necessary and appropriate disciplinary action as outlined in the university's Department of Human Resources policies; The Director will make determination in selecting staff to work in his/her area.


Minimum Qualifications: A master's degree from an accredited institution in a field related to business management, student programming, academic services, or student affairs is required; At least three years of experience in an assistant or associate director's position, or comparable, in student affairs programming or a field at an intermediate or senior level; The position of Director requires an individual with the ability to plan, organize, manage, and inspire others. He/She must possess demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills and be knowledgeable of the scope of operation of a college union or student activities program; He/She must be able to work with a diverse population and lead in formulating and implementing comprehensive programs. This individual must be skilled at budgeting and be an effective communicator, orally, and in writing; He/She must be knowledgeable of the student development theory and practice and have the forcefulness to make the total program operation of the Department of University Unions succeed, while maintaining the role of an educator and student development specialist; He/She must be able to analyze critical elements of departmental operations and possess mental and physical stamina in order to meet the rigors of the position; The Director must possess mature judgment, good character, have a sense of humor, and be totally dedicated to the principles of the college union and student activities philosophy.
