ASSOCIATE DEAN OF STUDENTS

Job Description: The Associate Dean provides administrative leadership and oversight to the Dean of Student's Units in the Dean's absence. The Associate Dean has the authority to exercise discretion and independent judgment in handling sensitive material and/or information based on in-depth knowledge of college policies, procedures and practices. The Associate Dean of Students is expected to anticipate and initiate action regarding administrative detail as it relates to office management and the operation of the Dean of Student's Units.

The Associate Dean of Students collaborates closely with other Dean of Student staff members to support an inclusive institutional climate that fosters community, creates opportunities for student learning, and supports student health and wellness. As administrative leader, the Associate Dean collaborates with others in the Division of Student Affairs to ensure necessary policies and procedures are in place to support student success.

The Associate Dean assists students with questions regarding academic and policy issues and makes appropriate discretionary decisions regarding the interpretation and implementation of University policies. The Associate Dean consults with faculty, deans and academic personnel on curricular and academic matters and provides accurate information in a variety of forums. The Associate Dean exercises responsibility for necessary and desirable academic actions consistent with requirements and procedures. The Associate Dean assists students in identifying and addressing concerns that affect academic performance by providing appropriate resources and referrals. The Associate Dean ensures appropriate action is taken to the satisfaction of the student, family, and/or regulatory agencies in compliance with policy, procedures, and legal requirements.


Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Higher Education, demonstrated experience in counseling, advising, or a student related area. A minimum of 5 years of progressively more responsible management experience and demonstrated leadership. Knowledge of student development and student learning theories, strong organizational and administrative skills, strong interpersonal communication skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, team building skills, the ability to build positive and effective relationships across the campus and community, a strong commitment to diversity, ability to work independently with minimal supervision, ability to manage multiple tasks, ability to work evenings and weekends as needed, and ability to provide exemplary customer service. The candidate must also have excellent supervisory and personnel management skills, a strong work ethic, evidence of good judgment, attention to details, ability to maintain confidentiality, and demonstrable personal integrity. The candidate must have significant experience with crisis management, program development and assessment, knowledge of academic policies and procedures, and experience interacting with the public, parents, students and faculty.
