ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR FACULTY DEVELOPMENT

Job Description: The Associate Dean for Faculty Development has responsibility for leading the planning, implementation and evaluation of activities within the Office of Faculty Development, to ensure that faculty needs are met and that programs are effective in increasing academic productivity and career longevity for BSOM faculty. Faculty development programs are based on needs assessment data and in response to national trends in medical education. The Associate Dean for Faculty Development will design, develop, and implement programs around the concepts of skills development and mentorship including faculty development sessions with well-defined objectives, small group learning formats, and faculty performance of designated skills. The Associate Dean also ensures post-session coordination with each faculty member's department to ensure mentorship, application, and evaluation of skills acquired in the program sessions.

The Associate Dean for Faculty Development is a resource for the BSOM Executive Curriculum Committee and regularly attends its meetings in order to align faculty development needs with curricular changes/needs and serves as a member of the Brody Council and interacts and collaborates with Basic Science and Clinical Department Chairs and students (where relevant) for program input. The Associate Dean for Faculty Development works with an advisory/steering committee for faculty development as a method to provide guidance and input for program activities. Attendance at national meetings and participation in groups such as the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Faculty Affairs is also a method for the Associate Dean for Faculty Development to maintain awareness of national and regional trends and issues in medical education. The Associate Dean will develop and manage a diverse portfolio of educational, training and advancement programs for faculty to support the professional growth of medical educators and facilitate teaching and assessment excellence through the dissemination of information about education pedagogies and methodologies.

The Associate Dean will be responsible for providing one-on-one coaching for identification of mentoring needs and/or creating individualized professional development plans for faculty at all stages of their academic careers to address challenges and opportunities of teaching students and residents, engaging in scholarship, and other professional development needs.

The Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Development has administrative responsibilities for personnel, budgets, and other resources such as space; is responsible for seeking grant and other external support for programs; is encouraged to publish research in appropriate academic publications; and has administrative authority for all resources allocated to the area of Faculty Development.
The Associate Dean will be a leader in the organization to promote the environment of teaching excellence for scholarship and promotion. The Associate Dean is responsible for formulating, interpreting, and implementing institutional policy and programs for the area of Faculty Development; and has substantial independence, authority, and discretion in program planning and design.


Minimum Qualifications: The position requires an MD or DO from an appropriately accredited institution.

Five years of experience teaching in an academic health center.
