Assoc Dean/Dir of Student Conduct & Acad Integrity

The mission of the Office of Student Conduct & Academic Integrity, a unit of the Dean of Students Office, is to support the goals and objectives of the University and the values of the Noble Niner by encouraging appropriate standards of individual and community responsibility; fostering an environment of personal accountability for decisions; promoting personal, social, and ethical development; and striving to care for the well-being, health, safety, and property of all members of the University community. The mission of the Dean of Students Office is to advance a UNC Charlotte culture of care by assisting students in navigating the opportunities and challenges of the Niner Nation Experience. In addition to Student Conduct & Academic Integrity, program units housed under the umbrella of the Dean of Students Office are: Identity, Equity, and Engagement; New Student and Family Services, Student Assistance and Support Services, and Veterans Services. Due to the ombuds nature of the Dean of Students Office, all staff members advise, counsel, and serve as advocates for students experiencing difficulties or crises.

Reporting directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, the Associate Dean and Director of Student Conduct & Academic Integrity serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team in the Dean of Students Office. The Associate Dean and Director is the primary conduct officer for the university and oversees the implementation and adjudication of the Code of Student Responsibility and the Code of Academic Integrity. This position serves as a liaison for the conduct process with other campus partners who have a role in that process, such as Academic Affairs, Housing and Residence Life, Title IX, Police and Public Safety, and Department of Wellness Promotions. The Associate Dean and Director also has a role in major university-wide safety functions and committees including the Pre-Admission Safety Review Committee, Campus Behavioral Intervention Team, Safety and Security Committee, and Demonstration Activity Resource Team. This position requires the flexibility, ability, and willingness to work nights and weekends in structured and unstructured settings with students, staff, and faculty.

SUMMARY OF POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves a primary conduct officer for the University managing student conduct violations, including serious violations that lead to suspension or expulsion from the university; violations related to sexual and interpersonal misconduct; violations related to organizational misconduct; and interim suspensions.
  • Provides oversight for the conduct process, and the implementation and adjudication of the Code of Student Responsibility and Code of Academic Integrity.
  • Leads a team of six staff, including one Associate Director, three Assistant Directors, one Administrative Assistant, and one Graduate Assistant within the Office of Student Conduct & Academic Integrity.
  • Gathers and reports Clery related data to the University Clery Compliance Officer.
  • Works closely with the Title IX Coordinator regarding the adjudication of Sexual Misconduct, Relationship Violence, and Stalking conduct cases.
  • Oversees realignment of academic integrity in collaboration with Academic Affairs to the Office of Student Conduct & Academic Integrity, including development and implementation of policy and procedures.
  • Acts as campus administrator of the conduct management software (Maxient), and provides training to users.
  • Chairs the multi-divisional Pre-Admission Safety Review Committee for applicants with prior criminal records or conduct history.
  • Serves as a member of the Campus Behavioral Intervention Team, a university-wide interdisciplinary team charged with identifying, assessing, and assisting students of concern.
  • Serves as a member of the Campus Safety and Security Committee and implements recommendations under the purview of the Dean of Students Office.
  • Works collaboratively with members of the campus community including Academic Affairs, Housing and Residence Life, Police and Public Safety, Title IX, Athletics, Wellness Promotion Department, Counseling Center, Legal Affairs, and Academic Affairs.
  • Oversees the advisement of the Student Government Association Judicial Branch.
  • Coordinates and facilitates training for university conduct officers and hearing panels, including development and application of training curriculum, ongoing training sessions, and standard operating procedures.
  • Supervises the Dean’s Certification process for student conduct records. 
  • Conducts educational workshops and training sessions regarding the student conduct and academic integrity processes for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Oversees coordination of program unit assessment efforts, including development of learning outcomes, assessment tools, and strategic goals.
  • Coordinates implementation and marketing of the Noble Niner, an institutional values statement.
  • Leads processes to review and revise University policies and procedures related to student conduct and academic integrity.
  • Responds to crisis and campus emergency situations in conjunction with or in lieu of the Dean of Students.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff regarding response to and management of students who exhibit disturbing or threatening behavior.
  • Develops, implements, and manages annual program unit budget.
  • Assumes duties and responsibilities of the Dean of Students in the absence of or at the discretion of the Dean.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education, or related areas.
  • At least five years post-Master’s work experience in higher education including direct knowledge of and progressive responsibility in the area of student conduct at an institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of of federal regulations regarding FERPA, Title IX, Clery, and the Campus SaVE Act.
  • Experience in student group advising, leadership training, and student development program delivery.
  • Demonstrative supervisory experience with professional level staff.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience managing budgets.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to develop collaborative relationships with other units within an instution, including faculty.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Understanding of student development and counseling theories and ability to apply theory to practice in a university setting.
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues facing the student conduct field and higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines related to student conduct, academic integrity, and Title IX processes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, a collaborative communication style, strong interpersonal skills, and proven ability to work with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously in fast-paced, high energy environment.
  • Experience with Maxient Student Conduct and Banner software systems.
