Associate Vice Chancellor Finance and Controller

Washington University in St. Louis invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Controller.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Chief Financial Officer, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Controller (AVCC) is charged with ensuring compliance with accounting standards, implementation of effective and efficient systems of internal financial control, and robust financial reporting that facilitates strategic decision-making throughout the university.  The AVCC actively safeguards the University’s assets through establishment of appropriate internal controls, monitoring of compliance and certifying the University’s financial statements.  The AVCC is accountable for the financial information provided to both the internal and external community (including tax), is a member of the global engagement committee and works with the office of general counsel to assure compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act while serving as an expert adviser to the CFO and other senior leaders.  The AVCC is also responsible for the operational performance of the Accounting Services departments supported by a staff of approximately 75 and will have a critical role in migrating the automated financial systems to a cloud-based ERP (Workday).

This is a career defining opportunity for a dynamic leader with excellent analytical, management and communication skills and extensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and fund accounting, as well as financial accounting, audit, tax, reporting and financial business operations. The ideal candidate will have a record of success navigating complex environments, preferably in a research university, and working effectively with individuals at all levels including Board of Trustees.  Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree (master of accounting or business administration preferred) with a concentration in accounting, finance or other relevant area, will hold CPA certification and possess 10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience at a university or comparably complex organization with expertise leading a team in financial reporting and operations.
