Associate Vice President for Finance

The Associate Vice President for Finance reports directly to the Vice President for Finance and Administration/CFO (VPFA).  The Associate VP for Finance serves as a strategic partner and collaborative leader in the ongoing advancement of the University’s business operations and financial planning.  The Associate VP for Finance actively promotes excellent service levels in supporting students, faculty, administration and staff and is responsible for the integrity of the university’s accounting operations, including accurate and timely preparation of numerous internal and external financial reports.  Direct reports to the Associate VP for Finance include the Controller, Assistant Vice President for Finance and Executive Assistant (shared position with the VPFA).  The Associate VP for Finance will be responsible for supporting the VPFA in the oversight of all finance office functions, annual budget, financial reporting, endowment accounting and reporting, grant compliance and reporting, accounting for capital projects, oversight of annual financial audit, and development of all fiscal policies.  The Associate VP for Finance will review all contracts for financial considerations and ensure compliance reporting and deadlines for all bond and debt issues. The Associate VP for Finance serves as Assistant CFO and may serve as acting Vice President in the absence of the VPFA. 

Duties:

  • Provides leadership to general accounting, long-term debt, grant accounting, treasury management, student administrative services, accounts payable/receivable, financial reporting and procurement
  • Provides high-level service and solutions to university employees on accounting and financial issues
  • Serves as a strategic partner in the ongoing advancement of the university’s business operations and financial planning
  • Engages in a collegial and transparent manner with all areas of the university to strengthen the overall effectiveness of the university’s financial operations and work to improve the dissemination and use of financial information
  • Coordinates the annual year-end audit and ensures accuracy of the annual audited financial statements
  • Monitors and ensures financial internal control procedures are appropriate for the university and makes changes when necessary for compliance and efficient operations
  • Supports the VPFA by preparing audit and investment schedules/reports as needed
  • Provides oversight of the preparation and ongoing updates of the five-year financial forecast
  • Will attend two audit committee meetings, one in Kirksville, MO and one in Mesa, AZ
  • Oversees the implementation of requirements resulting from new legislation or oversight agencies as they impact financial accounting, reporting, investments, and other financial management issues for non-profits
  • Serves as primary liaison with rating agencies and other external agencies for financial reporting, tax, and audit matters 
     
  • Ensures all documents and reports coming from the finance office are accurate, complete and timely
  • Coordinates the preparation of the annual IRS Form 990 and 990T
  • Coordinates with banks and investment firms on cash management, investments and debt instruments
  • Oversees detailed endowment accounting
  • Works closely with the Advancement Office on estate and trust gifts
  • Works closely with Information Technology Services to develop and enhance systems, processes, reports and data analysis
  • Sets goals and promotes continuous improvement in services, processes, automation and efficiency.
  • Stays current in professional knowledge and new developments
  • Develops skills, knowledge and cross-training among employees
  • Develops and maintains current written financial policies and procedures
  • The Associate VP for Finance will partner with the Assistant Vice President for Human Resources to ensure accuracy of payroll information and retirement plan audits. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance and CPA required
  • At least 15+ years of progressively responsible accounting, management and supervisory experience with 10 years at the controller level or higher
  • Experience working in a CPA firm performing client audits
  • Personal attributes should include: detail oriented, excellent communicator, listening and problem-solving skills, self-starter, service orientation, ability to relate well to faculty, administration, staff and board members
  • Must be a financial management content expert with both a tactical and strategic focus; hands-on working knowledge of the accounting/finance business functions and areas of responsibility required
  • Must be a strong leader, with a collaborative style, and possess excellent analytical, organizational and verbal/written communication and presentation skills
  • Must possess skill and experience with financial reporting, fiscal procedures and policies, knowledge of tax laws and governmental reporting, GAAP, FASB and working knowledge of and experience with financial management ERP systems
  • Experience directing and supervising other professional staff in the formulation of goals and objectives, organizing work and work flow, delegating authority, training, evaluating employees, and administering corrective action as appropriate
  • Must have an in-depth understanding of investments, long-term debt, endowment management and customer service
  • Ability to explain financial information to non-financial individuals clearly and meaningfully
  • Ability to provide financial leadership and oversight to all financial aspects of the university

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA/Master’s of Accountancy
  • Held the position of Controller at a higher education institution for at least 10 years
  • Corporate accounting with varied types of accounting experience
