Position Summary
Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) seeks qualified candidates for a core faculty position in the Program in Medical Ethics, Humanities & Law.
Candidates must meet the qualifications for faculty appointment in the medical school. Requirements include an MD/DO/JD with clinical ethics training and/or demonstrable experience; or a PhD in philosophical ethics/bioethics, or a PhD in an area of study related to bioethics (such as theology or sociology) with a specialization in healthcare ethics. Experience in clinical ethics such as serving on ethics committees and providing ethics consultations, ethics curriculum development for students and residents, leadership experience, and a track record of scholarly activity are required. Interest in and scholarly activity in either research ethics or empirical ethics are preferred. Candidates must be collaborative, proactive, and possess strong analytical skills, oral and written communication skills, and the highest standards of professionalism.
The successful candidate on will devote a significant percentage of time and effort in supporting clinical ethics education and ethics consultation a local Ascension Health owned healthcare system. In that capacity, the successful candidate will provide both ethics consultation, education, and committee participation and must be familiar with and able to provide education relating to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Health Care.
The scope of responsibilities includes: planning, delivery, and evaluation of ethics education for medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff; integrating ethics education and provide ethics consultations for our two hospital systems, Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare; individual ethics consultations; serving on ethics committees and consultation teams, including the study and improvement of consultative processes; working closely with medical school and hospital programs where clinical ethical issues arise; assisting with policy and program development; and developing collaborative scholarly activities in ethics and contributing to the literature.
