Research Associate-Fixed Term

Position Summary
A research associate position is available with the Department of Animal Science. The ideal candidate will combine interest and experience in both animal behavior and computer science.

The successful applicants will be involved in testing and developing automated video-based analysis methods for a USDA-funded project aimed at speeding collection of behavioral phenotypes from pigs housed in groups. Social behavioral phenotypes will be used to develop more robust models of indirect (social) genetic effects of pigs on pen penmates. Ultimately, data and detection methods generated by the project will be used to expand genetic selection criteria to social behavior to facilitate better welfare of pigs living in groups. The project will involve collaboration with colleagues working on swine behavior, genetics and statistical analysis at MSU and internationally. The applicants will be expected to collaborate with other graduate students and postdocs in the lab working on the project and to help coordinate a team of undergraduate students collecting data. The applicants will assist manual video decoding as needed in order to train and test various automated methods of detecting behavioral phenotypes.

In addition to the primary research responsibilities described above, the applicants will be able to participate in other Animal Behavioral Welfare Group and departmental activities including: assisting with the collegiate animal welfare judging competition, assisting with teaching of undergraduate and/or graduate courses, developing research questions related to their dissertation, and grant writing.

  • The ability to write computer code (in R, Python or related languages)
  • Ability to work with biometric or video-based behavior programs

  • It is also expected that the candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills and understanding of scientific methodology.
