Research Assistant I


Position Summary
This is a 100% time position providing technical support for agroecology research. The successful candidate will be part of research on sustainable intensification in Africa and Upper Midwest, with a research group involved in long-term experiments and on-farm research. Responsibilities of this position will be 50% to carry out laboratory analyses, and 25% assist with field monitoring and management. Report preparation, statistical analysis and writing under direction of a researcher will be the other 25% of responsibilities. Lab responsibilities include analysis of soil solution and extracts, sample preparation of soil and plant material, soil analysis for particulate organic matter, and microbial assays. Quality control of laboratory analysis and maintaining a safe, clean laboratory environment, and working with students are all part of this position. Field work includes assisting with field management, organizing and carrying out sampling to monitor soil, plants and environment. Data entry, checking and writing are all important skills. This is an off-date position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in ecology, horticulture, agronomy, environmental science, soil science, biology, natural resources or a related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to agroecology research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications
Laboratory experience in carrying out plant biology and soil science research is important, as is field expertise in monitoring field crops in Michigan; ability to assist with report preparation, supervision of undergraduate students, good communication and organizational skills are all essential.

Description of End Date
This is an off date position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

Summary of Physical Demands
Job involves lifting soil, plant and grain samples for storage and processing, maximum of 50 lbs. floor to waist high, no more than one hour per day. Also involves carrying backpack sprayer for chemical spraying on research plots and moving soil samples to/from the field, lab and storage areas; up to 40 lbs. from one to 100 feet.

Summary of Health Risks
This job involves driving a university vehicle that does NOT require a commercial drivers license, but does require medical certification. The job also involves wearing a respirator; spraying or mixing organophosphate or carbamate insecticides; working in noisy areas (above 85 decibels); operating a forktruck, tractor, or top-running overhead crane.
