Research Assistant I


Position Summary
This position will coordinate and oversee field-based research project on design, installation and maintenance of vegetation along urban highways. Activities will include: installation and maintenance of field research plots; field and laboratory data collection; use tree physiology research instrumentation such as pressure chamber, portable photosynthesis systems, chlorophyll fluorescence systems; management of hourly student staff will be required.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in horticulture, landscape architecture, or a related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements, experience growling plants in nursery and greenhouse environments; experience with field research methodologies used in landscape management, nursery management, or landscape restoration; experience in landscape design, installation and maintenance; knowledge of landscape plants. Valid driver's license.

Desired Qualifications
Experience with environmental monitoring equipment (e.g., soil moisture sensors, temperature sensors data loggers) and plant physiology equipment, (e.g., pressure chamber, portable photosynthesis systems, SPAD meter), performing specialized analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments in an area related to research being performed, certified pesticide applicator's license.

Summary of Physical Demands
