Laboratory Aide


Position Summary
  • Helps researchers with animal experimentation in the Sheep Research and Teaching Center.
  • Prepares sample collection materials for ruminant species.
  • Blood collection samples through venipuncture in ruminant species.
  • Prepares equipment for large animal experimentation (including weight scales, electronic eartag system, centrifuges, and ultrasonographer).
  • Cleans and sterilizes tissue culture and other laboratory glassware and washes storage cabinets and benches in order to provide clean equipment and work and storage areas.
  • Sterilizes biohazardous waste materials using autoclave in order to prevent contamination.
  • Prepares media, mixes and filters sterilized tissue cultures and other stock solutions and maintains cultures for future experiments.
  • Maintains storage units (freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks) to maintain adequate long-term storage.
  • Organizes and prepares samples to be shipped to other locations.
  • Collects packages, glassware and supplies in order to distribute to various laboratory locations.
  • Inventories, orders and expedites supplies for laboratory in order to maintain adequate equipment levels for research
  • Helps principal investigators with expense reports

Communications/Interpersonal Relationships Interacts with:
  • Undergraduate/Graduate and Post-Doctoral Students/Laboratory Research Technicians - in order to provide assistance with materials for their research.
  • Supervisor - in order to obtain work direction and assignments.
  • Faculty - in order to assist with daily operation of laboratory.
  • University Purchasing Office - in order to requisition supplies, expedite orders, obtain signatures and resolve problems with ordering.
  • University Support - in order to assist in the handling of paperwork and appointments.
  • Stores Personnel - in order to obtain supplies and walk-through orders.
  • Vendors - in order to resolve problems concerning orders and pick up miscellaneous articles needed for laboratory.

Responsibility for Health/Safety of Others
This position may have responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities include maintaining emergency first aid equipment including eyewashes and showers and ensuring that chemicals are stored in proper places.

Impact on Programs/Services/Operations
Errors in the preparation of solutions or cleaning of equipment are typically detected through routine checking or inspection but may lead to failure of experiments as well as time delays in repeating failed experiments. Errors in storing chemicals or equipment may cause accidents.

Work Environment
Combination of standard office and farm environment. The job requires significant physical effort and involving lifting of moderately heavy trays of glassware and restraint and handling of mature sheep.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired from specialized training such as that acquired in one year of college, technical, vocational or trade school with coursework in basic Chemistry or Biology; up to six months of experience in a laboratory setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The candidate must have prior experience working in a sheep farm research setting and specifically with preparing equipment for animal experimentation as detailed in the specific duties and responsibilities. The candidate must have prior experience working in a research laboratory setting and be proficient in the detailed specific duties and responsibilities.

Desired Qualifications
Experience working with pregnant sheep, lambing, and large groups (less than 75 animals) of sheep is desired. Ability to perform routine venipuncture and handling of mature sheep (i.e., ability to set them up on their rear end and trim feet) is highly preferred. Knowledge of sheep health care and experience with routine health monitoring of large sheep populations is also highly desired. A candidate with a flexible schedule is desired. This may include flexible work hours (i.e., early morning (6:30 am) and flexible work days (i.e., weekends or Holidays) on short notice.

Work Hours
3 days a week schedule work 6:30 am to 12:30 pm. 2 days a week 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Potentially sample collection needed up to two weekends a month. Week work hours would be adjusted when a weekend shift is needed to keep hours at 30.

Description of End Date
This is a limited term position funded for one year from the date of hire.
