Assistant Professor-Tenure System

Position Summary
The School of Packaging in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University (MSU) is seeking qualified applicants for a position at the Assistant Professor level. This is a tenure-stream position with a research/teaching/service (45%/45%/10%) assignment. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally-recognized research program in packaging design which leverages innovation and emerging technologies such as additive/subtractive manufacturing, Nano-scale engineering or other fabrication processes to obtain specific component properties of packaged products in order to enhance system performance (e.g electric, thermal, mechanical, costs, etc). Potential topics of interest include: the relationship between packaging system design and environmental factors such as compression shock, fragility, vibration, temperature, humidity, pressure, and system performance.

Candidates should be knowledgeable in additive/subtractive manufacturing approaches and in the design thinking process for problem solution; ideally, they will have experience with product development processes and optimization techniques. Experience with finite element modeling (FEM), computational fluid mechanics (CFD) and system modeling is desirable.

The individual will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in packaging system design, prototyping and additive manufacturing. Research should employ basic and applied sciences while addressing the issues and opportunities inherent in the changing supply chain. MSU encourages interdisciplinary collaboration. Potential research collaborators include faculty from the College of Engineering including: Biomedical Engineering, Human Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, Nursing, Mechanical Engineering, Bio-systems and Agricultural Engineering; MSU's renowned Supply Chain Management program and the Midland Composite Materials and Structures Center, the Center for Advanced Microscopy, and the Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research (iCER), home to MSU's High Performance Computing Center (HPCC) among others, in addition to available facilities within the School of Packaging.

The successful candidate will provide leadership in research on interactions between packaged products and the environment by developing an innovative research program, securing competitive external grant funding, publishing in high quality peer-reviewed journals, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, providing leadership and service in professional and scientific associations, and establishing strong ties with the private sector. The candidate will also be expected to demonstrate interest and promise of excellence in teaching. The initial teaching assignment will be two to three courses per year at the undergraduate level including (1) Package Development Technology and (2) Virtual Design & Prototyping and/or a graduate level course related to the candidates discipline and background.
