Assistant Professor


Position Summary:

The School of Packaging (www.packaging.msu.edu) in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University (MSU) is seeking qualified applicants for an Assistant Professor position. This is a tenure system position with a research/teaching/service (65%/25%10%) assignment and can begin as early as August 2017. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program with a focus on areas such as identification and monitoring the toxicity of chemicals present in packaging systems, evaluating their interaction with food products, developing strategies to detect and assess additives or predicting the safety of additives through modeling. The individual will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in the area of toxicology as it relates to safety of food packaging. Research should use both basic science and applied approaches while addressing the issues and opportunities facing the packaging and food industry. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate in research with the Center for Research on Ingredient Safety (CRIS) and the Institute for Integrative Toxicology. Other potential collaborators include Food Science and Human Nutrition, Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology. MSU strongly encourages such collaborations. Research support facilities available include Bioinformatics, Flow Cytometry, Genomics, IVIS Imaging, Mass Spectrometry, and Proteomics, among others. The successful candidate will provide vision and leadership at the interface between packaging and toxicology. The candidate will develop an innovative research program, secure competitive external grant funding, publish in high quality peer-reviewed journals, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, provide leadership and service in professional scientific associations, and establish strong ties with the private sector. The candidate should demonstrate interest in excellence of teaching. The initial teaching assignment will involve contributing to relevant graduate or undergraduate packaging courses. Faculty: Minimum Qualifications Support Staff: Minimum Requirements

Candidates must have the following qualifications: a) a doctoral degree in toxicology, biochemistry, risk assessment, food science, or a closely related field; b) demonstrated capability to conduct independent research; c) the ability to work collaboratively with research teams; and d) excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstration of impactful research and promise of research funding are important selection criteria.
