Assistant Dean for Teacher Education

The College of Education at Wayne State University is located in the heart of Detroit’s rapidly revitalizing Midtown area. The college is seeking an Assistant Dean for Teacher Education to provide leadership in executing its mission to “prepare effective urban educators and scholars who are reflective, innovative, and committed to diversity.” Wayne State University is a Carnegie Tier 1 research university, and one of 34 public urban research universities in the U.S. with a strong commitment to urban education. The College of Education serves over 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students across 30 degree programs, housed within four academic divisions: Teacher Education; Administrative and Organizational Studies; Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations; and, Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies. Beyond academics, the College has many active scholars with over $7 million annually in external funding to support their work.

 

The Division of Teacher Education offers Undergraduate, Master’s, Educational Specialist, and Doctoral programs to 1,000 students. Our Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Post-Bachelor’s programs provide students with a number of routes to initial teacher certification and additional teaching endorsements at the elementary and secondary level, as well as K-12 endorsements in the areas of special education and bilingual-bicultural education. We also offer Doctoral programs for students who intend to seek scholarly positions in colleges and universities, school districts, and educational agencies.

The Assistant Dean of Teacher Education leads the academic, administrative, budgetary, and research functions of the Division.

Required Qualifications:        

  • Ph.D./Ed.D. in Teacher Education and/or related sub disciplines
  • Extensive experience in higher education, and the rank of Full Professor (or Associate Professor capable of a Full Professor appointment)
  • Evidence of a sustained and successful program of research
  • Experience securing external funding and grant work
  • Experience in program, department or college leadership
  • Experience in teacher education standards, assessment and accreditation
  • Commitment to issues of diversity, inclusion and urban education
  • Strong strategic and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:       

  • Knowledge of academics and research across the wide range of education sub disciplines
  • Administrative experience
  • Experience in urban education and teacher education
  • Teacher education accreditation leadership

Essential Duties:    

  • Provide vision and leadership to the Teacher Education Division
  • Oversee the Office of Teacher Education Accreditation, as well as various program and college assessments
  • Support and facilitate faculty, staff, and student success in academics and research
  • Partner with the Michigan Department of Education, as well as other teacher education programs statewide, local school districts, and community partners
  • Represent the Teacher Education Division on the COE Administrative Council
  • Represent Teacher Education and the COE on University committees, task forces, and initiatives
