Postdoctoral Fellowship

The National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) at the University of Michigan is now accepting applications for its Postdoctoral Fellows and Scholars Program.

Program Overview: This university-wide, interdisciplinary initiative seeks to advance NCID’s national commitment to institutional diversity and its strategic agenda to bridge exemplary scholarship with multilevel engagement and innovation. The NCID Postdoctoral Fellows and Scholars Program promotes the outstanding work of early-career diversity scholars. A successful applicant will be attractive as both an NCID Fellow and a tenure-track or research faculty member at U-M and its peer institutions. While we welcome new PhD applicants, successful candidates may also currently hold early career tenure-track positions. This program provides a unique opportunity for a one-year fellowship at NCID to become more competitive for tenure at a major university. We anticipate awarding two NCID Postdoctoral Fellowships during the 2016-2017 academic year.

Scholarly Agenda: Applications are welcomed from scholars with interests that reflect the NCID strategic agenda, which is centered around three major themes:
(1) Demography – offering an empirical context for diversity efforts;
(2) Democracy – linking diversity to measures of meaningful participation; and
(3) Discourse – reframing the public and political discourse on diversity to provide the basis for leadership and action.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are engaged in innovative scholarship, research, or creative work on some aspect of diversity in the broadest sense. Awards are determined by the overall rigor of scholarly work, as well as fit between research interests and the anticipated academic department. A select group of applicants will also receive one of three awards – Exemplary Diversity Dissertation, Exemplary Diversity Scholar, or Emerging Diversity Scholar – NCID features the work of these awardees within an online National Diversity Scholar Network.

Application Details: All postdoc applicants are welcome to directly apply to the program. In addition, senior faculty members from U-M or other major universities are invited to nominate candidates who demonstrate outstanding scholarly promise and commitment to diversity. Nomination letters should include the candidate’s contact information, as we will ask nominees to submit application materials. The application deadline is November 2, 2015 for a fall 2016 start date.

Required application materials include:
• CV;
• Statement of proposed research and writing to be conducted during the fellowship year;
• Statement of contribution explaining how the applicant’s research, teaching, and diversity commitments will contribute to both NCID and a related U-M academic or research unit;
• Dissertation abstract;
• Writing sample, optional but highly encouraged; and
• At least two letters of recommendation.
