Position Summary

The Bowdoin College Department of Earth and Oceanographic Science invites applications for a two-year full-time visiting assistant professor to begin July 1, 2018. Possibility of a third year pending review and administrative approval. Ph.D. required by the time of appointment. The selected applicant will normally teach three courses per year and supervise independent student work that can include year-long research projects and honors theses. Teaching responsibilities will emphasize intermediate to advanced courses in solid earth disciplines. Two courses will have weekly laboratory sections. Expertise might include structural geology, geophysics, economic geology, mineralogy, petrology, or volcanology. Mentoring undergraduate students in honors and independent-study research is expected. The College's location along the rocky Maine coast provides excellent local outcrops for teaching and research. Department facilities include mineral and rock collections, rock saws, petrographic microscopes, and SEM with CL/ EDS / EBSD capabilities.
