Job Summary

Bowdoin Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program providing college access services and support to 167 low-income, Maine high school students annually. The Academic Counselor provides one-on-one school-based academic, personal, career and college counseling to area students as well as small and large group activities and training/oversight of area tutors and mentors. The Academic Counselor works closely with target school staff and families in northern Washington County to identify and recruit eligible area students as well as plan and implement regional outreach activities including: tutoring, college visits, mentoring, job shadows and cultural enrichment.

Education/Skills Requirements

Baccalaureate degree required.

Effective writing and verbal communications skills; ability to present effectively to small and large groups and to work productively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Proficient computer skills including use of social media, presentation, database and spreadsheet software.

Must be able to work well both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

Prior experience working with high school-aged youth and people of economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds required.

Knowledge of high school or postsecondary developmental and educational issues and some experience in a) academic/personal counseling, b) residential life, c) teaching, and b) financial aid required.

Familiarity with the state of Maine and knowledge of college admissions and financial aid are preferred.

A valid Maine driver's license and the ability to comply with the College's Motor Vehicle Use Policy is required.

Ability to regularly work in the Downeast Region and to travel throughout Maine is required.

Standard Work Days and Hours

This is an hourly, part-time, 38 weeks during the academic year. Typical schedule will be Tuesday - Thursday from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm but will vary according to target high school schedules and operational need. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required.
