Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Senior Director of Development is responsible for developing overall strategies and leading fundraising activities for university-wide initiatives, including signature initiatives of Fearless Ideas: The Campaign for Maryland, such as need-based undergraduate scholarship and fundraising opportunities associated with the University's partnership with The Phillips Collection. The Senior Director will also provide major gift support for ongoing university programs with fundraising opportunities such as the Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Office of International Affairs, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The Senior Director will coordinate his/her fundraising activities with campus schools/colleges, the regional major gift team and central units. The Senior Director will also be expected to manage a portfolio for such projects and to successfully cultivate and secure six and seven figure gifts.

The Senior Director will be a liaison to campus leaders - often times including Deans and the unit development staff. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for University Development, he/she will work closely with the Office of Principal Gifts. The position may also work closely with campaign volunteer leadership. In addition, as a member of the senior team within University Development, the Senior Director will serve as an internal consultant to the schools and colleges during times of transition in their respective senior development officer positions, which may involve working directly with a Dean on an interim basis as the school/college's senior development officer.

This position requires the ability to manage complex projects and duties and will include working with all campus and central units to coordinate the creation and management of prospect pools, prospect/donor strategies and solicitations. The Senior Director may also help develop case materials, provide strategic analysis and reports on progress, and conduct presentations on the initiatives to boards, staff and others.

May require evening and weekend work. Travel is necessary approximately 40% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor's degree required.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of experience working in development, preferably in a research university environment. A minimum of three-five years of experience as a front-line major gift officer with a strong track record of closing six- and seven-figure gifts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A proven record of effectiveness in major gift fundraising of six and seven figure gifts. Proven success starting and managing innovative programs, projects or initiatives. Proven ability to work with volunteers and/or major donors. Demonstrated ability to manage, execute and complete complex tasks and to oversee large projects; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to complete tasks or projects; excellent writing and interpersonal skills are essential to this position.

Preferences:

Advanced degree preferred.
University campaign experience preferred.
