Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Division of University Relations seeks a Major Gifts Officer for the Regional Programs unit.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Major Gifts Officer works in targeted geographical areas and fundraises for University-wide special projects and initiatives including programs that are not unit or academically based.
The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for discovering, cultivating, soliciting and closing gifts of $50,000+. Additionally, s/he will develop a strong portfolio of 100-120 donors and prospects and hold a minimum of 150 prospect visits annually, both locally and nationally.

The Major Gifts Officer represents the University to internal and external audiences while working with members of the university community to advance our mission. The Major Gifts Officer develops a prospect pipeline by "cold calling" alumni, friends, corporations and foundations. S/he creates and implements strategies leading to increased engagement and giving in support of University and academic priorities.

The Major Gifts Officer must be a highly energetic professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing gifts in the five-figure range. S/he must be able to work collaboratively and strategically with volunteers, fundraising professionals and campus leaders.

This position requires extensive time out of the office meeting with prospective donors and travel is expected for approximately 60% of the time. Occasional evening and weekend work is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor's degree required.

Experience:

A minimum of three (3) years experience of progressively responsible development/fundraising experience. A successful track record qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding prospects and donors in the five+ figure gifts range.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be an energetic and creative professional with a proven record of working strategically and effectively with high level donors and building donor relationships.
Ability to make cold calls.
Ability to develop cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Interpersonal skills that will enable him/her to work well with diverse groups of constituents and colleagues.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines and the ability work independently.
Ability to work collaboratively and strategically with campus leaders, volunteers, and other fundraising professionals.
Strong listening, written, communication and critical thinking skills.
Must be able to manage a demanding travel schedule (at least 60% of time) as well as work evenings and weekends as necessary.

Preferences:

Higher education fundraising and/or development experience in a public research university.
