Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Art Director, Magazines manages the day-to-day design and production of all magazine work handled by the unit. Along with the Creative Director, the Art Director is responsible for the scheduling, planning, prioritizing, research, design, production and quality control of all magazines. The Art Director manages and coordinates all aspects of magazine work to best accomplish the goals set by the editor and Creative Director. Adapts and changes magazine design to incorporate new directives that reflect branding strategies as well as to implement University marketing strategic themes and priorities. S/he manages the print and web components of magazines. In addition, the Art Director is responsible for the coordination, production and design of a diverse range of other visual communications. These include publications, branding campaigns, special events packages, and other presentation materials and products to meet the university's communications and marketing needs. S/he sets an example of design excellence and provides leadership to staff designers and production assistants. While managing projects, the Art Director will art direct a small group of designers and a student intern. S/he provides technical advice and guidance to design staff and campus clients in the preparation of magazine design and general university publications. Will be required to work evenings and weekends as necessary with occasional local travel required for press inspections and photo shoots.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
BA or BS degree in Graphic Design or related field.

Experience:
Minimum of seven (7) years as a full-time professional in the field with proven skills in design and illustration. Portfolio of printed pieces primarily including magazine feature and design work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Expert knowledge of printing methods, procedures, techniques and media available for design production. Ability to develop procedures and specifications for printing.
• Expertise in Macintosh, InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and related software and hardware and the ability to train staff in these areas.
• Thorough knowledge of sheet fed and web printing processes, university vending procedures and quality control.
• Familiarity with cost saving techniques and procedures related to pre-press and printing processes.
• Expertise in typography.
• Illustration skills.
• Project management expertise.
• Ability to direct designers and freelancers.
• Organizational and planning skills.
• Client relation skills.
