The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is seeking an experienced professional, dedicated to customer service, to fill the role of Program Director of Military and Veteran Affairs for its entire portfolio of highly-ranked undergraduate, MBA and specialty masters programs within the Office of Diversity Initiatives. The Program Director of Military and Veteran Affairs will be responsible for leading the development of and supporting a portfolio of programming for the Office of Diversity Initiatives (ODI) to support Active Duty military, members of the Guard/Reserves, veterans, spouses and dependents who are prospective students, current students and alumni of one of the Smith School’s undergraduate or graduate programs looking to successfully transition out of military service. The mission of ODI is to advance a culture of inclusion amongst all members of the Smith Community with emphasis on military, underrepresented minority, women, LGBTQ+ and international students, faculty and staff. The Program Director will be responsible for participating in the recruitment and yield of military and veteran, spouses and dependent students and ensuring they have an outstanding experience in their program by addressing the specific needs throughout their time at Smith. The Program Director will also be responsible for a thorough knowledge of VA Benefits certification process to assist students with questions regarding benefits, billing and other related issues. This position will be responsible for collaborating with the other members of ODI on strategy and execution of diversity and inclusion goals for the Smith School. This position is a part of the Office of Diversity Initiatives team and will report directly to the Executive Director.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree required. 5-7 years of military experience or experience working with veterans is required. Thorough knowledge of DVA educational benefits; federal; and state benefits pertaining to veterans. Knowledge of Yellow Ribbon.
Experience providing and maintaining important data pertaining to: admissions, enrollment, special project activities, etc. Must possess leadership and entrepreneurial skills and have the ability to lead and guide graduate assistants and/or a work-study students. Willingness to participate in School and University committees and task forces as assigned. Experience working in a veterans affairs environment. Ability to work with people in a variety of settings—-excellent communications and organization skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proven leadership skills. Outstanding record of providing customer service to both internal and external customers. Ability to give presentations to public audiences. High attention to detail with exceptional organizational skills. Capacity to work well under pressure while managing multiple tasks and responding to changes. Creative, analytical and listening skills. Proven excellence in experience working with a variety of constituents: donors, alumni, employers, faculty, staff and students. Knowledge of Smith School Program offerings. Understanding of ADA as it pertains to veteran-students. Knowledge of computer technology related to student-veteran advisement and benefits. Ability to work with people in a variety of settings—-excellent communications and organization skills; Ability to work with little direction; Knowledge and experience in conjunction individual needs assessments. Proficient with all Microsoft Office Applications.\
Preferences: Master’s degree preferred.
