PROVOST AND SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFF

The Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs (PSVPAA) promotes excellence in all academic programs and initiatives and in the articulation of an academic vision, leadership in academic planning, and the development and administration of academic budgets.  As second in overall authority at the University, the PSVPAA represents the University in the absence of the President.  The PSVPAA also represents the academic interests of the University at meetings of the Board of Regents and the Maryland Higher Education Commission.

 

The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is responsible for the development, administration, growth, and quality of all academic programs and university functions supporting student success. The Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs administers programs related to completion of degree requirements at the undergraduate and graduate levels including: academic planning and development, transfer articulation, student retention, the honors program, the academic calendar, the faculty handbook, and student residency appeals.   

 

This office is also responsible for working with the University Council on policies and procedures that directly affect the faculty. Other key areas of responsibility include enrollment management, the library, assessment, and several research institutes.    

 

Leadership Agenda:

 

The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs will be expected to:

 

·         Assume the role of campus leader by developing a transformational vision for Morgan’s academic offerings and research opportunities, building on University leadership in urban research, and enhancing Morgan’s position as an “Urban Doctoral University.”

·         Assume major responsibility for implementation of the 2011-2021 University-wide Strategic Plan directed at completing the University’s transition from a comprehensive institution to one of high research activity.

·         Enrich the intellectual, social, and cultural atmosphere of the University through academic programming designed to attract, retain, and graduate a diverse population of students ready for future leadership in their respective professions and careers.

·         Foster a collegial decision-making process among members of the University’s Academic Affairs Council, as well as among the members of the President's Cabinet.

 

Areas of Responsibility Include:

 

·         Management of office and division operations, including budgets, academic faculty and staff evaluations, and faculty recruitment, retention and workload.

·         Accreditation and assessment, with attention to both Middle States and professional accreditation standards.

·         Academic program development, implementation, and review.

·         Policy and procedure review regarding students’ academic progress and faculty and academic support staff.

·         Review and evaluation of all academic appointments, including re-appointments, tenure, promotion, salaries, leaves of absence, and retirement.

·         Ensure compliance with state and federal mandates and regulations.

 

Qualifications Include:

 

·         Substantial academic experience and administrative experience including credentials sufficient for appointment at the rank of full professor.

·         Demonstrable evidence of successful transformations candidate has effected in an institution of higher education.

·         Collaborative, collegial, and student- centered leadership style.

·         Professional and ethical standards of the highest caliber.

·         Knowledge of, and appreciation for, the history of U.S. institutions of higher education, including HBCUs and other minority serving institutions.
