Purpose

Columbus State Community College seeks a leader to serve as Dean of the College’s Arts and Sciences programs.  The Dean will collaborate with faculty and other College administrators to create a strategic vision and provide leadership to strengthen and enhance the College’s relationships with four year institutions who are our primary partners.  Included in this vision will be a close relationship with the faculty around the combination of curricular evolution in the context of parameters set by external entities such as, the Higher Learning Commission and the Ohio Board of Regents.  Success for students pursuing both four year degrees and those using the Liberal Arts as part of their Career & Technical degrees will be of equal importance.  As an overarching goal, the Dean will work collegially with other offices to develop and implement College policy and procedure to fulfill the vision, mission and values of the College.

 

Reporting Relationships

The Dean reports to the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and will oversee faculty and staff within the Division of Arts and Sciences. In a collaborative and team environment, the Dean interacts with the President, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, Vice Presidents and other partners to ensure all work is in constant alignment with the needs of the College and its divisions.

Key Responsibilities

 

Strategic Responsibilities 

·       Collaborates with Associate Vice President for Articulation to implement and update all articulation agreements developed with four year universities and colleges and further collaborates to establish important Columbus State faculty relationships with faculty at four year institutions to ensure that courses remain carefully aligned and that faculty relationships become ever richer, deeper, and more effective.

·       Aligns division and departments with the need for an environment in which all courses are evolving in tandem with a shifting technology that promotes more extensive and effective digital delivery and in which there are high expectations for student success and support.

·       Works closely with the Director for Dual Enrollment to provide appropriate dual enrollment courses and the creation of pathways that ensure a seamless transition from the sophomore high school year through Columbus State to completion of four year degrees.

·       Aligns division and departments with an evolving and professional enrollment management strategy in which recruitment and course and program availability will be centrally directed but managed at the division and department levels.

·       Is vigorous in the use of grant opportunities to promote an effective and evolving instructional environment and the leadership of faculty in curricular issues.   

 

Operational Responsibilities

·       Maintain responsibility for managing the division's human resources and personnel decisions enhancing department chairs in consultation and collaboration with Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs.

·       Partner with Human Resources to ensure hiring in compliance with Equal Opportunity commitment and best practices.

·       Delegate appropriate responsibilities to chairs, provide direction in making academic and management decisions, and ensure work supports the academic college standards and policy.

·       Appoint all Division and Departmental members and chairs of Promotion and Tenure, and also Sabbatical Committees in consultation with the Coordinator of the Office of Academic Affairs Faculty Governance System and in accordance with the provisions of the Faculty Contract.

·       Manage and direct preparation of strategic and short and long-range plans for the division and departments in support of College goals and objectives.

·       Communicate activities, plans, decisions and events to faculty, staff and students

·       Establish division committees and appoints membership to committees in cooperation with division faculty administrators and staff.

·       Lead evaluation, review and refinement of Arts and Sciences curricula and development of instructional curricula based on assessed needs.

·       Engage in resource acquisition and fundraising as a priority to increase the scope and reach of the College.

·       Oversees academic advising related to programs in the Arts and Sciences.

 

Staff Development

·       Provide recommendations to College tenure and promotion committee on all faculty promotion and tenure applicants.

·       Encourage and promote faculty and staff development.

·       Conduct workshops for new and continuing faculty on tenure and promotion policies and workshops for faculty on curricular structure and development.

·       Assist and provide guidance to President, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, department chairs recruiting and retaining faculty and staff members.

 

Policy and Compliance

·       Ensure compliance with diversity objectives and priorities of the College

·       Supervise mentoring programs for assigned departments.

·       Supervise assessment and curriculum initiatives in accordance to College policy and procedure and the Ohio Board of Regents regulations and guidelines.

·       Develop and administer academic policy in conjunction with the College’s standards.

·       Establish and uphold operating procedures for the division and maintain liaison with other divisions and departments on matters relating to academic programs, physical assets and facilities.

 

Education Standards

·       Ensure conformity with College policies pertaining to student conduct, academic performance and appeals processes.

·       Ensure student compliance with degree and transfer module requirements and hear and act appropriately upon student complaints.

·       Maintain files on students making contact with, or appealing to office of the dean.

 

Budget and Finance

·       Prepare, monitor and ensure adherence with division fiscal year budget, as well as direct preparation of departmental budgets and supervise departmental compliance with College budgetary practices.

·       Maintain lab fee inventories and supervise assignment of lab fees and expenditures from lab fee accounts, as well as direct preparation and approve capital equipment requests.

·       Supervise expenditures of capital equipment funds within College practices and policies.

·       May ensure compliance with the Ohio Transfer and Articulation policy and prepare required annual reports to Transfer and Articulation Council.

 

Board and Community Relations

·       Serve on community boards and committees as appropriate to College's values, mission and vision 

·       Serve as a College representative to ad hoc committees as requested by the Ohio Board of Regents and to community organizations as requested by the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and/or President

·       Serve as the Office of Academic Affairs or administrative representative to College committees, councils, and task forces, as requested by the President, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, or other units of the College

·       Ph.D. in education, academic administration or closely related field of study with a minimum seven years experience teaching collegiately, including progressive responsibility in higher education administration
