Senior Bioinformatics Specialist - Tufts Technology Services

The Sr. Bioinformatics Specialist reports directly to the Director of Research Technology and holds a key position within the Research Technology directorate. S/he will lead the development, management, support and training of bioinformatics services for faculty and students, including High-Performance Computing (HPC), data workflow management, data analytics and visualization. In addition, s/he will work with new technologies, and support eminent faculty in all departments including the new Data Intensive Science Center (DISC), a vibrant, intellectual center that will empower both research and teaching across multiple domains including Arts, Humanities and STEM. Key responsibilities include: 1) developing, managing, and supporting a set of core bioinformatics services with a focus on Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), 2) providing consulting services as well as technical support and training to faculty, post-docs, and students from a wide range of academic backgrounds (including, but not limited to, biology, medicine, engineering, and nutrition). and 3) serving as a liaison to other TTS directorates that participate in the successful delivery of our services to the Tufts community. Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • MS in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computational Biology or a quantitative science (Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics) and at least 5 years of work experience.
  • Deep understanding of next generation sequencing (NGS) methods, quality scores and their interpretation
  • 3 years of experience designing and developing research and/ or production-grade bioinformatics pipeline solutions for NGS applications
  • Significant hands-on experience with:
    • Bioinformatics methods appropriate for microarray analysis (mRNA, miRNA).
    • Next generation sequencing (RNASeq, CHiPSeq, genome re-sequencing, targeted sequencing, and de novo genome assembly) or sequence, pathway and functional analysis.
    • Genome alignment, mapping, variant calling and annotation.
  • Previous experience with:
    • Hadoop & Spark platforms.
    • ETL workflows (Extract, Transform and Load) for bioinformatics & AWS Cloud environments.
    • AWS Cloud services.
    • Developing sustainable services for faculty and students.
    • Open source bioinformatics tools.
    • One or more programming languages and databases: Python, Matlab, R, SQL, MongoDB.
  • Very strong research background in bioinformatics and associated research methodologies including relevant literature (Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics).
  • Strong understanding of High-Performance Computing (HPC), analytics and visualization platforms, including extensive experience with UNIX/Linux based systems.
  • Proven ability to visualize and present bioinformatics data using relevant programming and visualization tools (R, Python, D3.js, etc.).
  • Software engineering expertise, especially as related to cloud computing.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide direct support to diverse, multi-disciplinary teams and students, instructors, or researchers from a wide range of academic backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and outreach.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computational Biology or a quantitative science (Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, ) and at least 5 years of work experience.
  • Prior experience at a NGS company or research lab.
  • Experience building a bioinformatics and pipeline team.
  • Experience developing NGS platforms.
  • Experience with R/BioC, GenePattern, Galaxy, or similar environments.
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) certification(s).
  • Proven ability to interpret and analyze large data sets and present results.
  • Experience in statistics with a focus on tools for bioinformatics.
  • Experience in visualization with a focus on tools for bioinformatics.
  • Experience with presenting biological results to various internal and external audiences.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Occasional evening or weekend work, as well as the ability to participate in a 24x7 on all rotation for major incident support activities.
